I finished SUrviving The Applewhiles last night. Overall, I really liked it! There were very unconventional roles (like a mother so engrossed in her work that she doesn't have any involvement (or interaction) with the kids at all, and a father also very engrossed in his own work. The grandfather is who takes the interest and checks up on the kids and encourages them.

THe kids are definately unschooling, but as said above, the parents' role in that process seems a bit on the neglectful side. (but then, this is a novel, not a non-fiction proponent for homeschooling)

There is real, individual learning going on, but in the first half of the book, each character seems like an island ..going off and doing their own things. However, in the second half of the book, the family really pulls together under one project that shows the impact of learning and doing together as a family..one of the greatest assets of homeschooling, in my opinion.

ANd the book is just so hilarious! The characters' individuality and their interaction, the things they do, the oopses that happen, etc. make for giggly reading all the way through.

I'd say this is a good read for those about 9-10 and up.
For an adult, it is a quick read, and every bit as enjoyable! I say go read it!
