 a photo a day....drummin' hands

My son loves to drum.  Always has.  His hands are always moving.   He is frequently witnessed tapping his fingers, slapping his legs, sometimes making an accompanying rhythm with his voice.  His first set of drums were some oversized beach balls and a pair of chopsticks in his toddler years.  Then we gradually advanced to covering the tops of garbage cans with duct tape, and real drum sticks.  Now he has a little collection of drums from different parts of the world.  The drum featured here is a doumbek, which is a gobblet-shaped drum from the Middle East, Africa, and Egypt.

Little Addition likes to drum, too!  (-:  She's a drummer, strummer, slapper, clapper, and boogier.  She fits right in this daytime family of hers.  (-:

Since featuring yesterday's fave spiritual book for kids, I thought to feature another one we have been enjoying very much.  It's called, Does God Have a Big Toe?  by Marc Gellman- author, columnist, and rabbi.  We had previously read his , And God Cried, Too, a book on healing for children- partially aimed at dealing with the 911 attacks, but also with the general questions and issues of childhood.

Does God Have a Big Toe is a collection of stories about Jewish Testament stories.  They are sweepingly general, entertaining, yet provide kids with a basic idea of the stories of Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, an onward.  The interpretations are a little different, and more global.  God is portrayed in a very gentle, and even whimsical manner.  The other "characters" are portrayed with a childlike innocence.  If you like a broader meaning of these Bible stories, you might like this book.  If you prefer the more classic interpretations, you may not like this for your kids.   However you feel, it may be worth your time to check it out.

I might try the latest Daily Haiku here......

The current prompt:
Write a double haiku (two three-line verses, 5/7/5 5/7/5) on any topic of your choosing. However, the beginning of each line must spell out the word MONDAY.

Much is going on
Onward we go through the days
Not one moment is

Down time, it seems, now.
And the older the kids get,
Yet more time we need.

Daily Haiku

Have a great day!

Thanks so much for these great book recommendations.

And I love the way you're capturing motion in these drumming photos. Wonderful choices on the shutter speed. And it was so nice to talk a bit yesterday!

Those are great pictures. We are starting to attend a drumming circle at our UU society. It is great fun. Thanks for sharing the haiku. Kids do need more time as they get older. I agree.
