 A close buggy look

How is everybody? I haven't been in here nary a-tall lately.   Been busy with projects and life- it's all wonderful stuff, but has pushed blogging back to the back cobwebby corner. Blogging moves in cycles, doesn't it?   I'd like to come around and see everyone!

Husband found a dried, opaque skeleton of a praying mantis.  Or is it a shed skin of one?  Do mantises (manti?) shed their skeletons?

Here he is.  Doesn't he look like Hans or Franz?  (that's fabric paint on my fingers- still working on the sunpainting)

Here is it's eye at 30X under the microscope-

This is his mouth in the lower left corner, part of his antenna running along the top edge of his mouth, and then his eye in the upper right corner...

Here's his spiny arm spines- still through the microscope at this point.........

Hans/Franz now occupies a sweet potato leaf growing on my kitchen windowsil.  He keeps me company while I do the dishes.  He listens really well, but doesn't contribute much in return.  A good, quiet friend.

Happy Autumnal Equinox, everyone!!!  Glorious Fall----breathe it in!!!!!!!  Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!

Son is really taking to reading with the Owlboy books this past month!  He just giggled his way through this second book in the series a few weeks ago, and finds books previously too difficult now readable!  Yippee!
(and can I do a little celebration jig?  According to Amazon, the reading level of this book is age 9-12.  Son is reading at "grade level"!!!!!!  I am so deeply proud of him!!  I'm dancing in the street!)

OH i AM SOOOOO ENVIOUS!!

Yeah they shed... I mean we were at the Science Museum on Friday and they had two praying mantises in the case but hey weren't moving.. I swear they were the later(older) shed versions
of old mantises (you know when they get that cool brown/tan color).

I thought to myself, duh.. common sense. Are they exo-skeleton buggies?

Coooooooool about the mantis exoskeleton. That's really awesome. I'm guessing that many insects that get quite large do shed, but I don't know -- and excellent thing to look up!

And excellent about your son's reading! It's so exciting when kids find books that spark their imagination and get them really excited about reading.

That is seriously cool! How neat that the shell is totally intact that way. What a great find. :)

Congrats to your little guy on the reading success!

Neat!  I really like the leafy/sun paintings below too!  Looks like a fun project.

Question/request for you...

Do you know where you saved the "Light" pictures you took during the photo course (with me)?  I can't find them on my computer (and the xanga archive is odd, can't load them either).  I have a really neat group running now, and we're doing "Light" on Tuesday evening (would be your Tuesday morning).  I keep thinking of your pictures!

If you have time, and feel so inclined, can you email me a few of the more dramatic ones?  Or any of your pictures that say "Light!"  I remember you had a very strong/sensitive feel for it.

No worries if you don't have time...or can't find them.  But hey, your pictures are the most memorable for me.  Thanks.
