 Enveloped in red........

My family took a little hike in a nearby canyon yesterday.  The leaves are just starting to change, so we have some yellows, some oranges, and in this particular canyon, lots of reds!!!

This is one of the few places where there are maples in our area....and their red leaves send me...

I don't often use my 50mm prime lens, but my focus of this hike was to get myself to see within it's parameters.  I tend to prefer to take wider angle shots, or macro shots, or macro wide angle shots.  Since my prime lens is more  middle-of the-road in terms of focal distance and the angle what it sees (it isn't a wide angle by any means)  I tend not to pull it out often.  Where it excels though, is picture quality (being a prime lens, there isn't as much glass to reflect through, and the images are really sharp and clear) and that it allows lots of light to come through- (f 1.6) giving great exposures even in lower light.  (and since I prefer to shoot in natural light, this is a big plus)

Still, I couldn't help pulling out the 70-300 mm lens for macros.  (the soft effect here is from shallow depth of field - (less than f4)-combined with shooting through leaves in front of the subject, very close to my lens. So there are leaves in front of, and behind the subject that are thrown out of focus.

(same technique as 2 photos above)

Cool, clear water....ahhhhhhh!

Breathtaking! The prime lenses really are a lot of fun. I find myself frustrated with having the "wrong" lens on the camera when I use the primes -- I always seem to be too close or too far away and can't zoom! -- but when you resign yourself to either changing lenses or living with the prime distance, you can get some amazing shots!

Gorgeous! I clearly went to the wrong place for my outdoor pictures.

These were clearly taken by an award-winning photographer! (says someone who is not the only one with something to tell....)
