Baffling Inconsistencies

I greatly enjoyed  TheyWontFindMeHere's post earlier this week, where she encouraged all to respond to a series of questions.  SInce my comment really sort of turned into a blog entry in itself, I put it over here, too.  Go on over and visit her!  The responses are a good read.......

"Please pick one or more of the below, give your answer and expound.  If you're "C, none of the above," make the "why" part really interesting, k?"

There are two kinds of people in this world:

A)  Real Christmas tree
B)  Artificial Christmas tree

Ok- artificial tree, because I feel sorry for trees that are chopped down.  Even if they are grown expressly for that purpose.  Then again- I don't really feel that conflict for the food that is grown expressly to be harvested for food.  Why is that?

1.  Tell kids there is a Santa
2.  Tell kids there is no Santa

I'm squirming here- because I don't want to look like a Scrooge or a party pooper!  We don't completely buy into the literal, "Santa is coming, so you better be good, he's coming down the chimney- yes he really is coming down that chimney!" story, lock, stock, and barrel.  We tell them about the love and compassion, and the spirit of giving ,and how it is observed at this time of year in many traditions.   And that people, as Santa Claus, have given children toys throughout human history, and the lessons we can take about love and compassion  from their examples. (what a mouthful, ay?  We've done this in pieces, as they get older...) We play Santa coming, but the kids know it's pretend in the outside world.  We love all the traditions surounding Christmas, and are deeply involved in them.  The kids have their own Santa magic inside them, though.  I want to be honest with my kids- even about Santa, yet when they ask if there's chocolate in the house,  I lie.  While I dip into my secret stash, I don't feel guilty.  Why is that?

* Shopping the weekend after Thanksgiving
** Staying out of stores the weekend after Thanksgiving

I loathe shopping in busy places in general, and especially on Black Friday.  I try to deemphasize the materialism in our culture,  and avoid all stores like the plague.  Except when there is a really good deal.  Why is that?

I.  Turkey
II.  Ham

Turkey!  Hands down- turkey!  Ham is ok- I'll gladly eat it, but The Holidays mean turkey for me!

Thanks for this prompt, TheyWontFindMeHere!  I loved this!

We always have a real tree -- NC is the #1 producer of Christmas trees! And we actually pick it out ourselves. If you go to an actual Christmas tree farm, it's really quite amazing to see all the trees growing -- the newly planted seedlings, the ones being groomed for 2-3 years from now, the ones ready for this year, and the monsters that are too big for most houses, but might find their way to some mall, mansion, or public space. Talking to Christmas tree farmers gave me a totally different perspective -- and we honor our tree by enjoying it through the season, then decorating it in edible ornaments for the birds and squirrels and putting it outside for the animals for a week or two and finally using it's boughs as mulch over the garden beds.

I avoid the heck out of the mall -- I either shop online or make my gifts, so no Black Friday for me.

We usually do prime rib for Christmas dinner, but this year we'll be doing country ham. We roasted a goose one year. Never did turkey, either in my own home or growing up -- I always felt like it was too close to Thanksgiving to do turkey again, I suppose.
