| | The Prophet Muhammed cartoon protest thing has gone too far for me to not comment on it. I just want to understand - what steps can be taken to communicate with the protesters? How will reason be introduced?
This is the most recent insane thing I've seen happen. Protesters burned down 11-15 churches in Nigeria (I've seen different reports) and about 15 Christians were beaten or burned to death on the streets.
A Danish newspaper prints 12 cartoons with Mohammed in them, and therefore Nigerians are burned to death in the streets and churches are burned down.
What do we do? I'm so lost right now. Does the fact that most of the cartoons aren't even anti-Mohammed make any difference? Does the fact that many sects of Islam depict Mohammed all the time make any difference? Does the fact that the cartoons aren't being published by a Christian source make any difference? Does the fact that some Nigerian who is just walking down the street and could not possibly have anything to do with what happened make any difference? I'm really worried here - what could we possibly do?
The head of Iran recently said that the U.S. must pay for this. Of course, the U.S. didn't publish the cartoons and Bush publically condemned them. Does that make a difference?
Most of the people who have been killed worldwide in these protests (at least 45 deaths so far) have been the rioters themselves, killed by Muslim security forces. Does that make a difference?
The cartoons were actually published about six months ago, and the massive violence didn't start until some Danish Imans started riling up followers in the Arab world by showing them 15 cartoons, including three made-up ones that had nothing to do with the Danish newspaper cartoons and were far more offensive than the ones the paper published. Does that make a difference?
I honestly want to know what possibly could be done now. What do you do when people believe exactly what they want to hear? What do you do when someone's worldview is so invested in a lie that they will shut out every fact that disproves their lie, just so they don't have to change their belief? I really want answers. And I don't have them. |
