Life is BeautifulAnd now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

The Prophet Muhammed cartoon protest thing has gone too far for me to not comment on it.  I just want to understand - what steps can be taken to communicate with the protesters?  How will reason be introduced?

This is the most recent insane thing I've seen happen.  Protesters burned down 11-15 churches in Nigeria (I've seen different reports) and about 15 Christians were beaten or burned to death on the streets.

A Danish newspaper prints 12 cartoons with Mohammed in them, and therefore Nigerians are burned to death in the streets and churches are burned down.

What do we do?  I'm so lost right now.  Does the fact that most of the cartoons aren't even anti-Mohammed make any difference?  Does the fact that many sects of Islam depict Mohammed all the time make any difference?  Does the fact that the cartoons aren't being published by a Christian source make any difference?  Does the fact that some Nigerian who is just walking down the street and could not possibly have anything to do with what happened make any difference?  I'm really worried here - what could we possibly do?

The head of Iran recently said that the U.S. must pay for this.  Of course, the U.S. didn't publish the cartoons and Bush publically condemned them.  Does that make a difference?

Most of the people who have been killed worldwide in these protests (at least 45 deaths so far) have been the rioters themselves, killed by Muslim security forces.  Does that make a difference?

The cartoons were actually published about six months ago, and the massive violence didn't start until some Danish Imans started riling up followers in the Arab world by showing them 15 cartoons, including three made-up ones that had nothing to do with the Danish newspaper cartoons and were far more offensive than the ones the paper published.  Does that make a difference?

I honestly want to know what possibly could be done now.  What do you do when people believe exactly what they want to hear?  What do you do when someone's worldview is so invested in a lie that they will shut out every fact that disproves their lie, just so they don't have to change their belief?  I really want answers.  And I don't have them.

Sadly, this is a problem everywhere in the world. If you can find a man with an answer, I'll be first in line to declare him king.

agreed.  But most of those people aren't using what they believe as an excuse to burn random neighbors to death in the streets.  So correcting these lies seems more urgent than most.

Yes, thank God for that. I'm simply not prepared just yet to handle burning neighbors.

Gosh.  I don't know either.
God, have mercy and save.

We're headed for WW III, i don't think the Muslims are helping themselves out very much right now and are way overreacting.  If Christians rioted every time Jesus was satired there wouldn't be much left.  It seems like some powers that be needed a spark and they found it

I'm not sure that "WWIII" can be an accurate description of the possibilities before us. The West has the Islamists out manned, out gunned and out funded in every way. The days when two armies can confront each other and duke it out are over; it would be far too easy to pound the lesser group into the ground, and they know this. What would be far more likely a scenario would be terrorism of an increasingly ubiquitous sort, where you have not just sky-scrapers getting knocked down or airplanes hijacked, but small, rural towns getting their water supplies poisoned. And of course, the ever-present threat of a “suitcase nuke.” Perhaps the most troubling aspect of this sort of assault, is that it would make it almost impossible for the west to continue even the façade of “honorable war.” We would be forced to play as dirty as they would in order to survive.
“Us” and “Them” are the devil’s two favorite words.
