| | Seniors are odd. As I am sitting here 15 minutes before the center opens, I look outside and see ten seniors now lined up. Some of them have been here for half an hour. They're lining up because today is the day that the Food Bank gives away baskets of groceries for seniors. Here's what's weird about it. The Food Bank won't get here until 9am. They never, ever get here early, and sometimes they're up to 45 minutes late. By the time they start there will be 50-60 people waiting. The average person who gets to the center between 8am and 9 am will wait over an hour to get their food. Since we don't have enough parking, many of them will have to park several blocks away and then stand for long periods of time. Since they're seniors, that's hard for them. But...the people who come between 10:15am and 11am get their food immediately, because the line of people has died down by then. They wait 10 minutes, tops. And they can park right next to the food because most of the cars have left. And the Food Bank has never, ever run out of food. Every month we tell people, "Come after 10! You won't have to wait." And yet, every single month at 8am, we have the line forming out in the cold, knowing that it will be over an hour before they get their food. Why do they do this? |
