Ok, so....

I didn't even have class today, but I woke up and went to work on my orgo lab at 11AM.  And though I set up my beautiful distillation system, I managed to accomplish practically *nothing* during those long three hours.

My stupid unknown mixture refuses to be distilled.  I've just about had it.  It's my third time doing this unknown, and I'm still distilling.  +_+

I thought my two compounds were perhaps an aldehyde and a ketone, but looking at the IR graphs, they seem to be neither one or the other.  Maybe it's a crazily complicated alcohol or something.  But please....  distill, at least!

And today, on top of all my other mistakes (and having a horribly messed up variac),  I forgot to put in boiling chips to my unknown liquid in the flask!  Good thing I found out before the whole thing exploded.  But then once I realized and put in two boiling chips, my instructor told us that it was time to cool down.

It was kinda sad that we actually WANTED to stay longer.  One student said "Why can't we make this class 6 hours?  4 hours is too short!"  What a complaint.  I mean.... I agree that that's definitely not enough time to do everything we're supposed to do in there, but to ask for more hours of class!

I've been going to this lab two days a week, 4 hours a day.  How sad is that.  I mean.... for TWO freakin' credits!  And I'm not nearly half-way done determining my unknown.

BUT you know what I realized today?  Here I go again.  This is Amy Kim speaking here.  I always take things rather seriously, you know.  So in the midst of sitting there in the lab, cleaning up my distillation kit, I learned a lesson, I thought.  The Boiling Chips!

Those are super-important!  That's the foundation!  And foundation is the most important building block!

We need to have a strong, firm foundation in all that we do.  Just like forgetting to put a boiling chip before heating a liquid mixture can lead to an explosion, heading out without a ´Ü´ÜÇÑ (firm) foundation can lead to such devastating disasters!

You know the childhood lesson you received in VBS?  Build your house on a firm ground!  On a rock!  Not on the sand!
