Define "friend."

A friend is a variety of things to me. There are degrees of friendship. I have friends I can laugh with but not count on for much else and that's ok. There are friends you can call crying in the middle of the night and they'll drop everything to be there. Friendship is in a lot of ways about being what that person needs from you in the moment and being able to change as the friendship changes. Friends are not cruel, insensitive people who never have your best interest at heart.

Someone you can call at 4am to pick you up or take you somewhere important, and they will crawl out of bed no questions asked.... there for you, no matter what.

A person you more or less like and respect who has shared a history with you. The longer and more involved the history, it seems the less it matters about the like/respect.

A person who no matter how long it's been since you saw them last, seems like you just saw them the yesterday. Someone who time doesn't change your friendship for the worse, but the better. And someone who reciprocates the "duties" of friendship. Communication, Love, & Silliness.

Someone who takes the not-so-good side along with wonderful side... someone who doesn't judge you by their own ideas... someone "gets" you, you can talk to, and is also fun to hang out with! =)

The first thing that comes to mind, without reading any of the above comments, is someone who accepts you for being you.

Someone who accepts me for me, who understands that my opinion may not be theirs but that is ok. Someone who will lift me up when I am down and be happy for me when I am up. Someone who I would do the same for. Someone who understands that a friendship is a relationship and that its a two way thing not just give or take but both and equality between both. Someone whom you could grow to love...not be in love with, but love as a true friend.

Someone who enriches my life, through both the ways in which they are "in sync" with me and the ways in which they push me to move beyond my comfort zone and understand a new point of view. A friend knows that in our relationship, we can each share our problems (even problems with each other!), our triumphs, our doubts, our joys, and our questions about life, knowing the other will listen, care, and try to provide what's needed, whether it's a shoulder to cry on, a word of advice, or a reality check. A friend is someone I can be my unedited self with, and whom I know is their unedited self with me. I'm sure there's more, but that's what comes to mind.

Here's how I define friend for myself. It's someone you're so close with you consider them to be part of your family.

I call lots of varying degrees of people friends- including ones who aren't really that friendly

You can have a friend who is someone you see everyday on your drive to work, someone you talk to online but don't ever meet in person, or someone who's been through the toughest times of your life right by your side. Friend is such a broad term

Yeah, I try to be loving to everyone who crosses my path. I'd say most of them are my friends, for me it's a loose definition. We get along okay and can laugh together. Good friend means a lot more in my world.

Someone who you respect, admire, love to be with, laugh with, and you can tell them most things, because you know that you're not gonna get judged.

Someone you like, who likes you back, who truly wants you to be happy and experience the good things. Who is happy for you if you get laid and she hasn't for 6 yrs. Who thinks you're beautiful because she knows you, and you think she's beautiful because you know her. (Or him) Who you don't mind if he/she knows your dirt. Who you can talk about your husband with. And if you're wrong, she'll tell you, and you respect her opinion. Who will share what little of whatever she has, and who you'll share your little bit with, without hesitation.

Wow, I'm gonna call my best friend; I miss her.

Someone who still wants to be around me when I've stopped pretending. Someone I don't have to change my wavelength in order to "get". Someone who can pick up the idle and sometimes mischievious thoughts in my head and giggle with me, without making me have to explain it. Someone who can hold me without fear of being judged, without fear of overstepping those imaginary bounds, without fear of anything. Someone I can hold as well. A friend is someone who can engage in a debate, heated or not, and still love me afterwards because we both get that sometimes there is no right side.
