AnxietyZone says today's the tenth anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death.

I've decided she's an alien from the future, and it can't possibly have been that long.  Can it?

Anyway, as I told her on her blog, I didn't get *into* Nirvana as much as I did other bands, but Kurt was the stand-out talent of the rock scene at the time.  No question about it.  And he was so tortured...the lyrics.  Jeebus.  It was hard to choose a song to quote below, but I thought that in memory of ole Kurt, I'd share my favorite Nirvana song tonight.

What's your favorite?  Where were you when you heard the news?  Do you remember?  I think I was at home w/ ole Phil.  It wasn't as big a deal to us at the time as it would become a sad event to ponder for me personally, over the years.  Whenever Kurt would be mentioned, I'd think about what he'd done, about his baby girl, about drug addiction, suicidal thoughts, misery, things that money can't cure...and I'd relate where I could, and puzzle where I couldn't.

Here's my favorite Nirvana song (except for their cover of Bowie's Man Who Sold the World)

Lithium

I'm so happy
Cause today I found my friends
They're in my head
I'm so ugly
But that's ok, 'cause so are you
We've broke our mirrors
Sunday morning
Is everyday for all I care
And I'm not scared
Light my candles
In a daze 'cause I've found god

Yeah

I'm so lonely and
That's ok, I shaved my head
And I'm not sad
And just maybe
I'm to blame for all I've heard
And I'm not sure
I'm so excited
I can't wait to meet you there
And I dont' care
I'm so horny but
That's ok, my will is good

Yeah

I like it
I'm not gonna crack
I miss you
I'm not gonna crack
I love you
I'm not gonna crack
I killed you
I'm not gonna crack
I like it
I'm not gonna crack
I miss you
I'm not gonna crack
I love you
I'm not gonna crack
I killed you
I'm not gonna crack

I'm so happy
Cause today I found my friends
They're in my head
I'm so ugly
But that's ok, 'cause so are you
We've broke our mirrors
Sunday morning
Is everyday for all I care
And I'm not scared
Light my candles
In a daze 'cause I've found god

Yeah

I like it
I'm not gonna crack
I miss you
I'm not gonna crack
I love you
I'm not gonna crack
I killed you
I'm not gonna crack
I like it
I'm not gonna crack
I miss you
I'm not gonna crack
I love you
I'm not gonna crack
I killed you
I'm not gonna crack

This may be a cop out, but Teen Spirit is up there for me. A) It reminds me of a friend I lost around that time and B) I think it helped define a generation, and esp. it's music.

I'm not a huge Nirvana fan, but I really found myself loving that song they just recently released - "You Know You're Right". And I was amazed at how good it sounded and how much it really held up over the years. I guess it took me hearing a "new" Nirvana song to get me to understand their relevence, you know?

I had the exact same thought.  10 years?!?!  How is that possible?  The first time I saw them I didn't have any kids.  Whoa.  And then he and I had a kid at the same time.  Kinda cool.

Isn't it crazy how all of that time goes by?

I was in high school, coming home when we heard the news on the radio. We thought it was a joke, or another attempt-induced coma.

You know, I really miss him.

I loved Nirvana before they became huuuge..something about Kurt ~ his scratchy voice, the tortured lyrics..drugs aside, he seemed like such a kind soul. I could never understand how he and Courtney got together because she seemed so hard and crass.  Hard to pick *one* song, but I always loved the line "It's ok to eat fish 'cos they don't have any feelings".. Don't ask me why.

The first time I heard "Come as You Are" on the radio, I thought it was the greatest thing I'd ever heard. I loved him, and the more I listen to Nirvana, the more I *get* him.

I loved everything about Nirvana.  Kurt DID seem such a kind soul.  I watched on tv this morning a book is coming out that talks about Kurts death being murder, not suicide.  Did you here that?  They imply that Courtney murdered him.  That he had so much heroine in his system, he couldnt have shot himself.  I would like to read the book for shit and giggles.

I think they are in the top bands of all times.  I really miss their music.:(

i can't even begin to choose just one! i love them all, but i guess my favorites are "smells like teen spirit", "in bloom" and "come as you are", although they are all so good. really. i just love nirvana. i also wondered how he could do that to his daughter. it's strange, she's turned out to look exactly like him. same exact eyes.

I had "All Apologies" stuck in my head for days when I first heard it -- in a good way.  Other favorites are some of the cover songs on Nirvana's Unplugged album, specifically "The Man Who Sold the World."

I can't believe it's been 10 years either.  Wow.   I wasn't a huge Nirvana fan, I wasn't really into that kind of music at that time of my life, but I still knew who they were and enjoyed the songs I had heard.  I remember hearing it on the news one evening, and feeling shock and sadness.

I remember exactly where I was.  I was at the bus stop and one of my friends walked up crying and she told me what had happened.

I remember where I was working.  I remember who I was living with when I was listening to Nirvana.  I remember wearing black for a week when I heard.  I was in shock.  I even bought a book on suicide letters later on.

I've been listening to a tribute to him on KROCK, a popular rock station in NYC and I was thinking how sad that he killed himself, that so many talented young people in music and in every day life do things like this.

I was chatting via IM with BoyToy and he said he likes RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE better.  They're from different eras but I see why he brought up Rage.  Because both bands in a sense celebrate the right to get angry.

So I asked him why he doesn't like Nirvana anymore and he said because they were anti-life.  That really made me think...  Nirvana wrote songs that spoke of pain and crisis just for the sake of the suffering.  They appealed to a young nation of people who relate more to pain than to joy.

I'm not saying Curt wasn't  a brilliant musician but he was never really of the living and his lyrics and music have that written all over them...  being able to relate so strongly to that is troubling to me.

I don't listen to bands like Nirvana or Tracy Chapman or NIN any longer because they're too dark.

I was a bit too young to get into Nirvana. I remember the older kids talking about them, and seeing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on MTV. I think I'm going to download some of their stuff now.

I was in a meat cooler, grinding meat when I heard.  Holy shit, 10 years.  Well, I'm glad it's been that long since I worked in a meat cooler, anyway.

The unplugged version of Pennyroyal Tea is one of the best live performances ever. My favorite though is the same as yours, Lithium. I was 8 years old when he died, so I sort of remember hearing about it, but I wasn't sure who he was. I was into the Lion King soundtrack at that point.

I was the Mom of a 9 month old and a 3 year old and we loved Nirvana. Our oldest loved to dance to them.

My favorite is Come As you Are..can you believe that these few lyrics can be so poignant

Come as you are, as you were,
As I want you to be
As a friend, as a friend, as an old enemy
Take your time, hurry up
The choice is yours, don't be late
Take a rest as a friend as an old memoria

Come dowsed in mud, soaked in bleach
As I want you to be
As a trend, as a friend, as an old memoria

And I swear that I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun

I wasn't a fan of Nirvana's music and I am still not to this day.  I used to wonder why so many people were into Cobain and why he was worshipped so highly.  Then I thought about my musical influences.  I thought about what John Lennon means to me.  And George Harrison.  And Elvis Presley.  And Maurice Gibb.  And several others.

While I may not have been a fan of his, I do get it now.
