I haven't gotten political in quite a while. I used to harangue my mother for always watching CNN non-stop. She would have it on at 8AM when I woke up and it'd be playing even after I get home from work at 7PM. She would be glued to the television, but she at least got the full spectrum of the news cycle. However, I encouraged her to stop simply watching the news and begin to watch news digest shows that help to interpret the barrage of information that she receives on a daily basis.
Now that she hasn't been home for nearly five months, very little news actually echoes through the house. I still watch my usual programs, but my current favorite is still The McLaughlin Group. The show features the bigoted Pat Buchanan, but I guess it's fun, because you get to see him get slapped around by the host and the show's resident liberal, Eleanor Clift. They usually have a token minority on the show, either a conservative Jew or a liberal black guy. Lately, they've been featuring Middle Eastern journalists from time to time. I think The McLaughlin Group is perhaps the most reflective of the political barometer in this country, especially considering that many of their predictions are actually correct. Of course, the joy has to be the fact that they practically beat each other over the head while trying to get a word in edge-wise. It's much more equal-handed in the back-and-forth discussion as opposed to supposed balanced shows, such as Hannity & Colmes. I swear Pat Buchanan shoots off four-word explicatives during breaks. Eww..
