Korea, the end.

so this is it. the end of my trip to korea. that probably means a looooot less posts once i get back, but here's the last couple days.

most of my days in korea consisted of sitting on subway. i live about an hour away from the main parts of seoul at the second to last stop on the #3 line... so a lot of the time when i get on.. it looks like this...

dang... this ride is super lonely... u can't even see people in the next car... and just fyi.. there's no one in the car in front of that one either...

anyways! yesterday was my last official night to hang out... so we had to do the samgyupsal/soju thing. just a lil of both to say goodbye. a new friend joined us! susan from sc.

so the aprons are used just in case u splatter meat juices all over ur really beautiful gap shirts. (thomas, i wanted to steal this apron for u so u can bake cookies in it... it's really manly looking but i chickened out... plus i used it... plus stealing is wrong.. so i left empty handed).

i didn't eat here or anything, i just thought it was kinda random to see a king taco in korea... made me think of pastor arnold and usc. holla to sc!

and lastly.. today we went to a concert. clazziquai and loveholic. hmm, i really didn't know what to expect cuz i've never really done the concert thing, but it was really fun and we jumped up and down like crazy and what not. i got to hear a lot of girls scream at the main singer... "alex". he was an ok singer.. me and albert didn't think he was that cute.. but that's proabably jealousy...

here's me and the girls we went with to the concert. the two closest to the camera (sarah and jenny) were among the girls sreaming "we love you" to alex.

hmm... so the picture isn't all that great cuz it was dark and i had no idea what kinda lighting conditions it would be cuz it kept changing.... but this is clazziquai. personally i like clazziquai's music a lot more than loveholics but i think loveholic stole the show in terms of performance (although clazziquai's version of quando quando was a nice surprise) mainly cuz of this girl.

this is jisun from loveholic. she's crazy. when she introduced herself she seemed all sweet and soft-spoken.. then the music starts and she's jumping around and singing like crazy.. super into it. kinda reminded me of U2.

just another shot.. i thought was pretty cuz of the colors...

and then when all was done everyone started shouting "encore" and so clazzi and loveholic both came out and busted out with a bunch of random songs together like... "california dreaming".... but it was still a cool ending... though i dunno if u can count it as an encore if they planned to sing it... unless they just planned on having the confetti and streamers fall after the encore that they knew they were gonna have.... anyways, it was great.

anywho, here's a random vid clip of what it kinda was like... the audio quality is terrible cuz it was super loud and basically it was peaking my mic... but if u turn volume down u can kinda hear that it's the kim-sam-soon song. =P

and that's basically how i end the trip. on a pretty cool note in my opinion.

thanks grandma & grandpa for putting up with me for the last 6+ weeks. thanks to all who hung out with me and made korea fun, esp albert and lydia. gratze!

=) fade to black.

winding down the loooong road which has been this trip. my dad came to the states as y'all know and he took me and a few friends to lunch at a restaurant that chains off of tony-romas. apparently here it's a niiiice restaurant whereas in america u go to eat cheap ribs and get full/fat.

later that night me and my dad went to dad's 30 year "homecoming" which is his reunion

he was in pachai hs. 3rd "ban". apparently there are like 10 mini-sub classes at his high school and they all have pride. it's kinda like la canada and small schools.. but instead of 2 per class there's 10. and they bag on each other like crazy. for example, when school 4 was announced people would be like "yo sit-down u guys got the worst grades". ok, so it's not the greatest trash talk but it sounds better in korean... they bag on each other over grades 30 years later... i love it.

more school 3 buddies. notice the empty bottle of johnny walker black label... and all the beer. i wonder if my high school reunion will be like this. 4 years of telling us not to drink.. then come back 30 years later and booze us.

the guy on left is my dad's friend, dad in middle, teacher on the right foreground. background guy i have no idea.

here's a terrible picture of a tiger ice-sculpture. by the time i got around to taking a picture, it had been melting for quite some while... the official "Home Coming Day" ice tiger!

i think this is my dad with his homeroom teacher.

me and my dad. this is a terrible picture of me.. but the only one salvagable from the night with just us two in it. the name tag for those of you that can't see it says "ee hyun gyu ah dul" which means "Kyu Lee's Kid". haha... so my name tag didn't even have my fricken name on it.. i'd walk around.. and i'm the only 20something person in the room.. and they'd grab my name tag.. stare at it and be like.. "OH.. u look like ur dad when he was in high school... and skinny!" ajushees with alcohol are funny cuz then they'd say stuff like... ur kyu's kid? ur too good looking, he must not be ur dad. haha! my dad shoulda beat all of them down! how can i look exactly like my dad... and then not be related. haha. johnny walker is a funny man..

i bounced from the night early to shoot pool with albert... we have now played 99 times. gross. that's more than 2 games everyday i was here... but interesting thing happened that night.. here's the timeline.

final train to where i have to go is 10:58.
10:45 - Finish playing pool and head towards the door to leave thinking we have good time
10:45:30 - Owner of pool hall stops us to talk to us and basically challenges me and albert to play with him (we were both playing well and this obviously caught the eye and envy of the owner and worker)
10:47 - Finally get out of there promising to come back later to beat them.
10:47:02 - think crap! we're behind schedule for the subway!
10:47:03 - start moving quickly to train station
10:58:02 - arrive at subway station to see subway doors close and start to leave
10:58:03 - curse silently.
10:58:04 - still cursing silently....
10:59 - decide to try to cut the subway off at another stop... start running frantically in this desparate pursuit
11:00 - get on a taxi
11:17 - get off taxi at another stop and run.. fly down the subway terminal
11:17:10 - jump down the stairs and see subway doors close
11:17:11 - stick my hand into the closing door out of desparation
11:17:12 - say ow quietly as the door closes shut on my hand...cuz it hurt
11:17:13 - doors re-open and i get on... sigh in relief and look away from judgemental eyes of korean people who stare at this loser who's all sweaty now in a pink shirt that just hurt his hand and probably heard him say ow.

ok.. so re-reading what i just wrote it doesn' t sound as stressfull... but if i missed this subway i woulda had to pay a crapload to take a taxi home and i just wasnt down for that, so we started an adventure... looking back on that night i have come to the conclusion that: it sucks for me and albert to be good at pool ;) haha, cuz then that stupid owner wouldn't have stopped us to talk and we woulda made all the trains on time and there'd be no drama.. but that was a fun night.

3 ways to know ur adjusted to korea while on the subway:
#1. u fall asleep on the subway and wake up 30 seconds before ur stop... somehow... it's amazing how these people pass out the second they get on and just wake up at their stop. my friend susan double checks each stop to make sure she doesn't miss hers. she's new here. i can sleep now =)
#2. people fall asleep on you and you don't care.
#3. you fall asleep on other people... and you don't care =P

final week!

T-minus 10.

approximately 10 days till i go home. curious.

Hi mom. apparently you look at my xanga a lot and i've not been updating recently so this one is to a degree dedicated to you.

Guess who's here? mi padre esta aqui! i've honestly been looking forward to spending some time with my dad in korea cuz my dad and i have been busy these last 20 years. honestly one of the farthest things in my mind was for me and my dad to be in korea together but now that we're here, i don't think there are very many things cooler. it's kinda weird how today, the first day we spent time together, i couldn't help wonder if a moment like this would ever happen again. just me and my dad (no mom or bro) in korea together, i figured that the chances were slim so hopefully i appreciate what i have here while i have it. (that's a good lesson kids, write that one down... right next to 11x11=121 and shake with your right hand while in india).

my dad took this amazing photograph. amazing right? haha, well, so he's no ansel adams but i like giving more credit than necessary.

here's us at a sushi restaurant first night dad is here. (from front to back: grandma, grandpa, me, pa, pa's hs friend).

ok, it's a short post, but tonight was fun.

oh, and since i talked about my dad i'll give some love to bro and mom too. first, bro...

bro... your cool. haha, that's it. your a better person than me and i'm dang lucky.

and mom... i'll share a story about u and in turn how weak me and my cool bro are. looong time ago me and bro came to korea... we were lil kids and we stayed with above grandparents... APPARENTLY we got home sick... and we were sad... and my mom found out. one day my grandpa says, hey we have to go to airport to pick up my friend. he told us we were picking up his friend who was a monk, and thus bald... we were young so he told us not to laugh, so we went to the airport preparing not to laugh at this monk, not because we were going to laugh.. but we were kids and stupid and if someone says don't laugh at someone when you see them... when you see them u'll probably laugh. anyways, as we're waiting who should come out but mom... this is where the camera goes to wide-angle slo-mo shot cuz we go rushing out to meet her and end credits roll up. so that's my mom in a nutshell, always worried and willing to fly half-way around the world to make me and bro even a tiny bit happy. much love to her.

ok, that's it... oh, and to everyone who asks "what do u do in korea". here's a sum up... lotsa sleep, "wine" tasting... in the form of soju... and lotsa pool with albert... we want once and for all to settle who is the better player. best outta 100. we played 93 times. ;) i have 51. SO! it's official, the rest of the 7 games are just fo show... I WIN! PUHAHAHA!

for those of us who know albert, let us take a moment to remember how bee-jus he probably is... ok, that's enough.. now here's a short clip of me playing pool like 5 years ago to celebrate.

adios.

nothing to do with korea...

this isn't an update of my trip, actually it has very little to do with anything except that by watching a french movie with korean subtitles.. and subsequently having no idea what's going on, i remembered something i really liked....

no, i don't like this man... i do like what he does... he's the real life spiderman, his name is David (pronounced daveeeed cuz he's French) Belle. if you go to youtube and watch his clips you'll know why... he was one of the inventors of this movement called le parkour, better known to some people as free-running. if you guys remember a while back those nike commercials where guys just run around and jump on and off buildings and stuff, that's what it is. here's a link in case u wanna know:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBapQdXxGKg

anyways, i was watching a movie called yamakasi (which means something in the line of modern day samurai or something like that) and my memory was refreshed, thus i got on the internet and did some watching and research and decided to let people know about this even if they never get around to doing any of it.

random picture of james bond? hardly! apparently another guy from the yamakasi crew is in this movie and just thought it was an interesting sidenote and another reason for people to go see this movie. the trailer looks cool and it comes out 5 days after i get back so guess where i'll be!

anyways, that's it. korea is still great, i sleep a lot which apparently allows the release of leptin which in turn tells the brain it's full so i'm kinda losing weight just by being here cuz i don't eat as much (consequently when u are sleep deprived ur body makes less leptin and more ghrelin which is a hormone that makes u hungry so when u eat late at night and get munchies during finals week there's a reason).... and that's the end of this public service announcement.

watch david belle. watch yamakasi. watch le parkour. watch bond, james bond.

random note: just wanted to say how cool my girl sarah is =) she was totally ok with me having a dream i was married to hyori, she's everywhere here and i guess it slipped into my subconscious... though....i guess it helped that in the dream we had a miserable marriage and i never saw her. haha, but sarah is still cool, no? =D

한국! FIGHTING!

so a few days ago i met up with my MOM's college alumni. hmm.. weird right? i hung out with my mom's friends. but it was ok, not too bad. kinda awkward but not really.. for most of the day i was taken around by one of the daughters of the friend and she was really funny. she knew english enough to converse but very proper. when we walk around and don't hear what someone says we say "WHAT?, say again?" but she says. "pardon"?. proper right? like, can u pass the poupon proper. but she was cool. we went around and she took me to this river thingy. apparently a year ago this river didn't exist. there were apt. built on top of it but trash piled up and long story short they made a pretty river.

she looks hella happy to take a picture with me right? =P

later that night, my mom's friends took me on this mini-cruise on the han river where we just kinda cruise around, it was kinda cool except it's like a couple thing... like.. everyone on that trip were either kids with their significant other or.... well, that's all i noticed cuz i got bitter....

this are the kinda boats we road on... it was slow moving... apparently on these boats koreans filmed a tv show kinda like mtv's next, where you go on and girls pick guys and stuff... and after if you get lucky you get a date. they then take a picture in like this neon heart thing which i will not show for obvious reasons of pride...

but! to sum up my mom's friends were really cool

a few days later i went to a hardcore sports even known as k-league soccer... hmm.. if you don't know.. k-league is kinda a joke in terms of professional soccer leagues... but it was still cool cuz we got to go to the world cup stadium where korea beat such power-houses as italy in 2002... memories... anyways:

we went to go see FC (futbol club) Seoul (3rd place)

=) k-league is so great about 1/8 of the stadium gets filled... sigh... but it was still worth it. you don't even get assigned seats. u get a section, like section E. you go and sit wherever u want... we got section E... sat in section F. =P

korea! fighting!

hmm. lonely guys...
