i’m about to show you a picture. bwack, our drummer, thought it would be a good idea. i didn’t see any real entertainment resulting from its showing, but he assured me there was much there to entertain. he snorted and said, “wow. that’s funny. people should see this.”
i asked, “why? why should people see this?”
he said, “because. it is funny.”
i said, “i don’t think it’s funny. i think it is depressing.”
“exactly,” he said, “which is sort of why it’s funny. yeah, you need to show them this.”
“i still don’t see the value in it.”
“make sure that the quality and size is substantial, so they can look through your files and see what all is there and observe your labeling system, you have a system right?”
“why would i want people to look at my files? i don’t think that’s a good idea.”
“and it will be great for them to see your desktop background.”
“i don’t have a background. it’s just what came on the computer. backgrounds make me nervous. and they make it too difficult to read the file names.”
“exactly. people should know that about you. it would be enlightening. it would tell them things.”
“i think it’s useless. i’m not going to show people my desktop.”
“there are a lot of people i’d like to see the desktop of.”
“huh, yeah, me too. i wonder what ryan seacrest’s desktop looks like? i bet it’s not the default background. freak, i need to get a background. you know he has a website?”
“i was thinking more like, thom york, or trent reznor. i think it would be interesting to see how they organize their stuff. what they name their folders. i would feel i knew them better if they’d let me see their desktop.”
“you know that’s my greatest weakness.”
“what?”
“organizing things on my computer. i can’t do it. when i put files where they’re supposed to go it’s like they cease to exist, the files, it’s like they never happened. when they’re in their proper folder i can never find them again. i don’t like using the search [spotlight] function. i think i should know where i put them. when they’re on the desktop, they’re alive, they’re there, they’re important.”
“this is why people should see this.”
“it feels like too much. too personal. now i wish you wouldn’t have seen my desktop. stop staring.”
“it’s just that, it’s so, well, it’s just hard to believe that’s your desktop.”
i should point out the one folder on the desktop labeled “desktop”. there is a folder in the “desktop” folder that is on the desktop that is also labeled “desktop”. so, if you click on that “desktop” folder that is on the desktop you will see a bunch of files and folders, one of which is labeled “desktop”. now, in that second layered “desktop” folder, the one in the first “desktop” folder, there is another “desktop” folder. it’s sort of like the russian doll thing. in the “desktop” folder is a “desktop” folder which has a “desktop” folder that has a “desktop” folder, etc., etc.... this goes on for quite a while. so, pretty much all of my files are in “desktop” folders that are in “desktop” folders that are in the “desktop” folder that is on my desktop. i bet seacrest doesn’t have an ingenious system like that. then again....
favorite comment(s) by you guys: there were two comments that brought me immense joy.
first there was a link to the following photo sent by achoi77. it is awesome. this is of a guy who just keeps everything on his desktop and uses spotlight to find what he needs.
and then this fantastic video link sent from diamondICE
i love you people! you enrich my life. i am better for you being here.
the link isnt working, i think you are just teasing us
my background is a picture of one of the amps you guys used on tour that says "matchless". i took the picture sideways and in the dark, so it looks like the vague outline of an amp and the word "matchless" is starkly luminous.
p.s. i am in agreement with the previous posters in thinking that your screen capture would be fun to look at once it is up and functional
Yeah it's not working at all for me. I do have a system like what you described though... I keep trying to organize my desktop by putting it all in one folder. As a result I have folders within folders all with ingenious names that have the word desktop in them. My favorite folder name is "All the crap on my desktop that in pointless and crowding it up"
I could definitely see it. It's a .tiff file and opens with quicktime. My desktop looks a lot like that, mainly because I click "open with" too much and don't ever delete things after I look at them. I love my mac. :D
Umm...*stares*
I don't think I understand this genius thinking, my eyes can't even see this said amazing desktop.
By the way, from the way you describe your desktop, I think my overly organized brain could not comprehend the picture even if it was there...
I loved the description, the story, it made me laugh.
Your screen is very interesting. I think it must be very hard for you to see all the files. What resolution is your monitor set at? Is that why you wear glasses? Is that why your hair is so stock straight, because you're stressing out finding all these "desktop" folders?
Or, perhaps, we just need a .gif, a .jpg, or something... but then... your screen really could be that tiny.
this guy just saved everything on the desktop, used spotlight to find his files.
if you stare at it long enough, it looks like a school of fish swimming happily through the blue sea. not the completely horrifying mess of documents that makes my OCD go nuts.
oh my goodness. Saying that it's cluttered is an understatement.
AHHH!!! That made me cringe at how much you're wasting your apple!! I'm gonna pull out the nerd in me and tell you that your computer probably is a bit slower with that desktop than it should be. It's a little complicated to explain but it somewhat hogs some of your memory and slows down your startup, especially once you upgrade to leopard. And come on, even windows users know how to use the "clean up" or "arrange by" command. Are we to reduce ourselves to savagery?
On another note, your desktop folders setup totally made sense to me if I imagined myself as a windows user. But luckily, we have the F11 key to fix that.
I'm really curious to know what's in your "burgled videos" folder and why it is named so. sounds a little sketchy if you ask me!
I read the title of you entry & thought 'yay Chacos!' & I read on anticipating what this 'depressing' picture could be... thinking 'oh I hope it is not too depressing' & at the end I was like 'there was nothing about Chacos... Hrmmm" Then I reread the title... "Ohhhh'. Oh & it is not really depressing but I think it is an illustration of your life & hair. P.S. B Wack is one smart fella.
@JoJo Nieves - the files in my "burgled videos" folder are videos from my surveillance camera of my house being broken into. it's pretty awesome. i have 6 videos of my house being broken into and 1 of my mailbox being stolen. the mailbox video is in a previous post. the follow up to that post is rather sad though. the guy in the video "died in custody". i should probably post about the last break-in with some of the footage as it's pretty exciting. the girl that broke in last time was sentenced this last week. 10 yrs in prison. i really hope i don't have to add any more videos to that folder...
it's okay, we still enjoy your music and blog.
fear not the spotlight, it really does like you, promise. and next time you need a screen grab, just hit shift + /⌘ + 3 then the space bar. don't fear that either.
how do you find anything? it still looks cool though...at least it's different ^_^
from far away i thought they were cheerios
You know what I'd do? I'd move all the files around until they formed some kind of pattern or shape. Like a fish. Or an elephant. No, I lie. I'd throw them all in the desktop file. I'm sorry. I'm not a genius like you. Everyone knows real genius is messy.
Why do people break into your house? Are they really that... I really want to say 'stupid or crazy' but that is mean. It just breaks my heart that people are that way. Gosh.
burgled a funny word. i would love to see some of that footage.
"here is where stuff is.doc" = epic
it seems strange that you have such a ridiculously orangey orange outside to your computer, yet you have a default mellow blue background engorged in the chaos that is the iconage on the screen.
Computers tell a lot about the person. It kind of reminds me of the first scene in 101 Dalmatians, where the owners and dogs, though two different types of creatures, look just like one another. David Crowder has his human form, David Crowder has his computer form.
very messy...i'm the total opposite, i'm actually kinda OCD about my desktop being clean. i can't stand for anything to be on the desktop. If there happens to be something on there, it's only temporary and will shortly be moved into a folder under "documents". my background is purple and in the center is a picture that i took with you in Raleigh last summer.
on another note: we had campus church tonight at LU and Ergun Caner spoke.... he was sharing a story with us about a date he went on (before he was married) with a really pretty girl who was "out of his league". He said he was SO nervous that he was shaking worse then our balcony during a Crowder concert....haha...we all cheered....just wanted to let you know that we love you guys at LU :)
