tonight is
"american idol – idol gives back". which is cool. if you’re not watching this season, well it’s sort of the same as last season – american idol is raising a crap-load of money and giving it to worthy causes and the way they are doing it is by having a bunch of high profile artists and guests on the show to help raise awareness of domestic and global crisis issues.
i think of american idol as the melting pot of our pop-sentiments, the mean of our collective consciousness, which is why simon is so compelling. he is a barometer of the masses, the median. i think he genuinely feels that he is speaking for the average of us all, which is an intriguing idea to me. but that’s beside the point. what i’m thinking is that if american idol is the collection of our consciousness, appealing to the average of what we’re thinking and feeling, then it’s pretty cool that one of the shows is centered on our collective responsibility to our neighbors. this gets really cool if i’m able to summon within myself a decent dose of un-cynicism and think about it for a minute or two. for one night, a bit of american idol’s mission and the church’s mission align which means something significant, maybe.
last night, watching idol, i experienced previously unexplored emotions. the theme for the night was – “inspirational song”. i had received an email shortly before the show aired saying that “american idol” had requested publishing rights for the song “stars” and that there was a very slight chance that it would be preformed by one of the contestants. this was cool but terrifying. i mean, for one, i’ve been watching this season and i have my favorites. which means there are those who are not my favorites and who need to leave the show so my favorites can advance. well, what if one of the ones who is not in my favorites was the one requesting the song? what then? would they then become my favorite? this created terrific internal turmoil. and too, what if they are one of my favorites and they sing the song and it doesn’t go well, will i be partially to blame? absolutely! it would be totally my fault! or then simon berates them, like, “nope, not a good song choice for you, sorry,” in his pompous little accent? i mean, he totally trashed a dolly parton song with dolly watching! well, needless to say, the song was not performed and in my opinion my favorites still remain intact. but it was fun i will admit.
here’s the thing though. i don’t know which contestant it was. so, think about it, and let me know who you think it might have been and also who you think will win and any thoughts in general about this idol-atry.
my favorite comment was from
somebody_you_know and it was as follows: *yawns*

Gosh, I don't know who...ooh, maybe Jason?
I seem to agree with Simon 90% of the time.
I think David A. will win, but I'm a die-hard David Cook fan.
david archuleta's my favorite this season,
he has such a pure voice and a good heart. :] what about you?
Hm. I want to say it was probably Kristy Lee Cook or Jason Castro. I do also agree with Simon's comments almost always. Hope David Cook wins it though, even if his performance last night probably set him back a bit.
oh man. if your song was performed on american idol, i'd watch that episode just for that.
i haven't been paying much attention to american idol... is that bad?
Of course agree with Simon. He's the only person who actually judges well. Here's an idea kick Paula off and get David Crowder to be a judge......
Oops, I mean Mr. Crowder......
I think it was Brooke.
She and David are my favorites.
I think I actually have a little crush on David. Except that he's 17. And he licks his lips weirdly while he sings. And I have a wonderful boyfriend.
David Archuleta is so girly.......
I think its Castro....I saw a video of him singin at LakePointe in Rockwall...
i thought they were bringing back sanjaya to sing it. oh well. a boy can dream. ha.
i think it was hillary clinton who requested stars. i think it's a good thing she didn't sing it, i just can't possibly imagine her doing it justice. i mean...singing david crowder in a pants suit? no.
While I have watched a season or two of American Idol in the past, I have not been following this season and therefore cannot comment on which contestant I think it was who requested your song. What I can say, though, is congratulations, that is really awesome! I'm not entirely surprised that one of your songs was requested. Your music is amazing so, in my opinion, it was really only a matter of when, not if. Hopefully sometime in the near future one might actually be performed on the show (and we will all hope it's not butchered). Let us know and I'll be sure to watch. Congrats again!
I think it's Jason. It's totally the kind of song he likes to sing and I could see him with his guitar strumming "Stars" while singing all happily and into it and perhaps swaying side to side a bit. Also, from what I can gather, he seems to be a "solid Christian" as one blog stated. [ http://subthemag.com/tss/2008/03/16/jason-castro-from-american-idol-leading-worship/38 ]
It's funny I just wrote an entry last night about American Idol too. My top picks to be exact. I seem to be beating you to entry topics this week although your entries are far more interesting to read. haha
Btw, I bet whether or not it was him, if you really are curious and wanted to know who chose the song you could find out by trying to contact him. I'm sure he'd be excited to hear from you and he'd be able to tell you who it was or if it was in fact him.
Umm yeah I'm thinking it was either Castro or White. I really like both of them, but for different reasons. I also like David Cook and Syesha (that girl can sing if you asked me), but I haven't made a final prediction yet. Those are just my "Final Four" for the event. haha
RIP Carolina. We'll be back next year.
well, first of all, congratulations to you on having the privilege of someone even considering your song! i mean, there are millions upon millions of songs out there and to have your very own song be one that could have possibly been sung as "inspirational" is such a an honor. :o)
i think one of the davids will win AI. they're all pretty likable and good at singing. it's hard to tell though cause i feel like it's pretty unpredictable.. it all depends on which songs they choose and how well they sing them week to week. but then again, some people just stick to their favorites no matter what. it'll def be a guy tho, that's for sure.
i think david castro is the one who was thinking about singing your song. my roommate just told me he is christian! did you know that? it's encouraging to me when i see other believers out there in the limelight. i wonder if he is fearful of what the general public will think if he sings a christian song.
i really liked this entry of yours. it's cool to read about your reflections on your own thoughts and feelings. whoa, i wrote a book. have a great day!
When are you going to be a high profile artist on American Idol to help raise awareness of domestic and global crisis issues?
Definitely Jason... dorky Texans unite!
(by the way, I'm one too)
This is the first season I've actually gotten in to. It only took what seven seasons? I think David Archuleta will win the whole thing. But I also believe David Cook and possibly Carly Smithson and Michael Johns will get a recording contract out of this.
I'm not sure who I would like to see win, but I know who I want to go home. :)
jason castro perchance?
and i believe this captures the innermost depths of the essence of Simon Cowell far better.
goodday!
I've heard record sales (of songs covered) get huge boosts after they've been on Idol. That'd be good no?
Someone almost sang your song?! That is awesome! I would have been so excited if I was watching and I hear one of you guys' songs! It would have made my night! I bet it was either Jason, Brooke or David A. (It would have fit Jason's & Brooke's vocal ranges well. I get the feeling that Brooke, David A. and Kristy are religious, so that it what accounts for my choosing Brooke & David A. I don't know if Kristy would have picked it or not. Hmmm.)
i love that you watch american idol. it is one of my favorite favorite shows!!! i got all my roommates into watching it...so it's kind of like a bonding experience for us, haha. david cook has probably been my favorite for a while now...he is freakin amazing...except for last night, when...he was not. but i like jason castro more and more every week....his ukelele rendition of somewhere over the rainbow was incredible!!...i love his guitar/acoustic stuff...i will probably buy his CD if he makes one like that. and finally, i like brooke white...she's just so cute and genuine and i really like the tone of her voice.
I only like to watch American Idol when the people are trying out, but it woulda ben so cool to have one of them sing Stars!
I think that you should get back-up dancers. They could pop and lock for Jesus.
