EXCITING NEWS: THE NEW UPCOMING "CHROME DOME"

I just got my CAD drawings from my designer for the new Chrome Dome.  It will be in two different pieces... the chrome top (actually high gloss lightweight plastic) will have a large hole in the center allowing direct flash to go straight to the ceiling.  You'll gain a stop going direct.  So that's one stop more efficient, for those of you who have slower lenses.
The shiny back will be a highly reflective plastic/chrome.  Both pieces will be in bright silver or gold (actually, closer to amber because in my tests when you use "gold" the skin tones actually look green).  You'll notice that there are screws in the image on the right.  That's correct.  You can add the chrome backplate - or not.  Up to you.

These modifier domes will work with the "cloud" lightsphere because the cloud is very diffuse and the extra power will just make the cloud lightsphere about 1-2 stops brighter because of the interior reflective mirror.
The super cool thing about this design is that it is totally modifiable.  You can have the chrome dome for more power, regular dome for softness, amber dome for shooting in shade outdoors, or in incandescent lit ballrooms.
What I like best is that the Lightsphere foundation stays the same.  All you do is snap on different lightweight domes for totally different results.
The question is going to arise- when would I use the chrome dome?  For example I would use it to add about a stop and a half for like group photos in the church.  I welcome your comments.

So I would use this one for more flash power? I have this one location that brides love that is so dark, this would be perfect! when are we going to see it on the website for sale? I would so love to be a test hamster! Speaking of hamsters and mice, I know it's off subject, but you just bought a hybrid car and all. I had to take my hybrid car into the shop today for a strange sound and the air wasn't working. I have only had my new one for two months. Seems that with the very hot weather that we have had recently, the mice in the "mountain hills area", west virginia, decided to make a home in my air conditioner of my hybrid car! I have a picture that I am going to scan in at work tomorrow and send to you, you just have to put it on the site! Okay, so you don't have to put it on the site, but you at least have to look at it! It is sort of strange to see. Well can't wait to see the new domes!!! I'll order a few for sure!

The additional forward light will be a big welcome in certain situations.  I'm currently Photoshopping a wedding I shot that had a huge ceiling.  I used the LS Cloud with the ID in place.  Had I had the extra 1-1/2 stop addition of the new dome, life would have been easier.  I suspect the light will be more specular though... but many of these group formals do not have people against the walls... so I don't expect it to be a big deal in terms of back shadows.  It's just another option and that's going to be a good thing!

Any price on the new dome yet and when we can expect to see it?

Web Design gone wrong!

Okay...so I have heard that wedding planners are all talk...I guess this link proves that!

I can only imagine a webpage like this with all videos by Gary!!

This isn't really suited for this link but it is some funny stuff! The more you listen the funnier it gets!

Hilarious stuff!!!

(Disclaimer -- I'm looking forward to seeing some of the test images...)

It seems to be, well, starting to complicate the whole supplemental lighting process.  (This is only my opinion...and it's overpriced at FREE, I'll admit.)  What I initially LOVED about the first LS was it's simplicity...when I had the flash on the camera, I had the fong dong on.  Sometimes I'd make minor adjustments but most often I'd get by with one flip and I could keep shooting.  The more options / decisions I have to make on the fly...the greater the likelihood for mistakes.  Perhaps all of the options will greatly benefit the portrait / location shooters...but I'm really leaning toward natural light shooting (w/ faster lenses) for weddings as much as possible...it's just easier!

Dan, I read the forums, and there are people who wish that the Lightsphere would be more efficient and therefore drain less battery power.

The Lightsphere can be used in its' original format (I still see people using my original Wienerdome on TV often). But in the cases that you wish for options, these options are here.

It isn't that confusing. For example if you shoot Canon you know how blue shots get in open shade, especially in morning or at dusk. It was an awesome thing to be able to snap on this little 25% CTO amber dome and watch the beautiful images.

i have thought of adding a reflective surface on the back side of the inside of the dome too,

i think this chrome dome will work fine, but will it hurt the softness of the light?

i also wanna comment on the fact that, i think the BEST thing about the lightsphere is the fact that it is very very simple and straightforward

i have used the lumiquest so i think i know what a complicated and messy design can be.

(i first had to attach the cinch strap, then the black reflector, which has a weird shape and slides down all the time.

then u have to change the reflector card inside, and put the translucent plastic on the outside)

the lightsphere is good becuase its simple (once u put it on, it almost never comes off, except of course the lid, which is not very stable and comes off easily)

and its also very effective.

so would putting all these new design compromise its "simpleness"?

Good comments. I think the Lightsphere is beautifully simple too. There are some people that want more efficiency because they have slow lenses, etc.

This will be the same amount of softness when shot through the "Cloud" dome because the stop and a half or so that it gains through the chrome there is also the added power of having the flash shoot straight through an open hole in the top.

So I'm basically adding a stop or two of efficiency.

He Gary,

great progress is always good, just one concern from me, why screws to hold the reflector, why dont you make a click system

for that, this way people can change if they dont want the reflection it gives them more options..:)

well thats my 2 cent anyway..:)

This looks really interesting and can't wait for it to come out. To be honest I don't shoot wedding stuff but what I find these lightspheres great for is location fashion, headshots and the other day full body shots of a one year old in a studio setting for a childrens acting website. They start them young! Seeing the use of screws gave me an idea. Would'nt it be great as another design to have a inverted dome that worked like the 'Hensel Beauty Dish'

http://henselusa.com/reflector3.html

Go to the bottom of the webpage to see it. With your new inverted dome you already have the hole in the middle and by using extended screws you could have the middle bit the hensel has. Overall this might have a nice effect on the catch lights on the pupil of the eyes and the light would be nice. Good idea or crap idea?

Hey Gary, I have been using silver foil to reflect more light forward. I saw now sense in loosing half my light behind me. Its great to see you have addressed this issue. I will certainly be on the waiting list for this one.

By the way, I saw this really cool ATV/watercraft thing and I instantly thought of you. check it out.http://www.aquada.co.uk/mediacentre/quadski_low.php

Hey just talked to my plastics guy. He said we are going to have stay-put knurled knobs. We should have them at our booth for Photo Expo in NYC.

Hey Gary, I have been using a white card (cut to shape) to reflect more light forward. on my first LS (ORIGINAL HARD PLASTIC) I saw no sense in loosing light behind me. Its great to see you have addressed this issue.
I figured that this could be attached to the dome lid..it would be able to rotate as needed.. I thought of mentioning it to you.. I am not a fan of the inverted dome.. is there a way to reverse this on the new vinyl LS's..I am sure your designer can come up with solution..Michael C

Gary, I cannot wait for the chrome dome's release. It will benefit me a heck of a lot because I use slower lenses at the moment and will go faster as the income increases.  Let us know as soon as it is ready to order.  I use the LSII now and it is great but the added power of the chrome dome with my slower lens will be a god send.
