IPHONE AND AT&T ARE SO STUPID TOGETHER
IN FACT, SO FAR THE IPHONE SUCKS.  IT'S STUPID.

I just got my iPhone.  I'm with Verizon and they're great.  I have a Cingular (the new AT&T) account and rarely use it because AT&T is a stupid stupid company.  Well when you buy an iPhone, you have to be with AT&T to plug into iTunes to activate your phone.

So get this:

I plug in the iPhone and try to activate.  It says, "it will take a while to activate your phone, you will be emailed when it is activated".  Then I get a message saying, "Your rate plan will not work with the new iPhone".  So there's a button you click to view the rate plan.  Well it then asks you for your secret passphrase... which I did - and they said it wasn't correct.  I'm like - yes it is, and the operator said, no it's not.  So I want to attach the iphone to another one of my other Cingular accounts, but every time I plug the computer in - it remembers my failed attempt and says, "please contact a representative."

So now I have to go to an AT&T store, show two pieces of ID, and reactivate the new keyword.  Then and only then can I review the rate plans, and then and only then can I get to activate it.

Think about how stupid that is anyway that you have to be with AT&T just to get in iPhone.  The reason I got one is I don't really know.  But I bought it tonight and won't even be able to turn it on until tomorrow.

Oh and it's only 8 gigs.  That's really dumb.  It's a slick looking toy, but honestly - so far the iPhone looks great, but AT&T is a stupid stupid company.  Does anybody else have comments about your iPhones?

Don't forget it's EDGE only, so using the internet will be like taking a trip back to 1995.

Gary think there has been some stuff on www.macrumors.com about some people having activation problems. You might want to check that out. 8GB might be small but it is meant to be larger than any existing smart has built in, on the market. In the UK we have to still wait until October to be able to get one. Looks like we will get 3G though instead of Edge

I've read too many negative reviews about the iPhone so I'll wait to see what iPhone 3.0 has to offer when it comes out in a few years.

My husband works for a different cell company and told me the new iphone was cool but wasn't going to work well because of linking with AT&T.  What was iphone (apple) thinking?????

lol...this is actually really wierd to me.

one thing to remember i guess, is that at&t may be a really stupid company - but apple literally forced them to do whatever they wanted and set it up the apple-way or no-way. they designed the software for activation, they configured all of the rate plans and they even contacted at&t (the day the iphone was released, i believe) and said "crank up the edge - this is unacceptable" and it instantly went from like 40kbps up to over 200kbps which is technically 3G speeds. you can read more about that here...

http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/28/atandt-customers-seeing-sudden-boost-in-edge-speeds/

anyway. everything you mentioned about activation i personally had no problems with, but the rest of your issues don't bother me at all. the 8gig deal isn't bad to me because it's a phone. i've never even had a phone with 1gig and from a technical standpoint adding more gigage would have added more sizage....lol.

i guess all in all i know this is gen1 and for a gen1 anything it's amazing. you know as well as anyone that they'll be collecting all kinds of data to improve gen2 and 3 and maybe we'll get more space then. either way, apple stuff sells at almost full value on ebay even when the new versions of their stuff releases so i'll be doing that all the way through.

anyway...that's my .02 cents.

I am a big fan of the iPhone. Pretty cool stuff on there. Imported photos look really great so you can always carry around your portfolio. Everything is very intuitive, just like all the other Mac products. I do wish the ringer volume was louder, and also I wish there was a mass delete button for email. And sometimes when I'm on a busy street it's hard to hear the person on the other end -- but who needs to hear anyone on a phone call anyway when you got all these other fun things to do on the iPhone ;)

From shotshot : "8gig deal isn't bad to me because it's a phone."
From zoonenschein: "but who needs to hear anyone on a phone call anyway when you got all these other fun things to do on the iPhone"

Wow - A $499 phone where you can't hear the person on the other end. Apple should be the marketeer for U.S. foreign policy.

I do agree that the iPhone has some great features and can do magical things, but for me, at this time, the iPhone doesn't have the functional value per dollar that I would like all in one gadget.

I would love to get an iPhone, but it's a 1st Gen, so I'm holding off.  Plus AT&T just SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  They're advertising should be fewest calls completed, made, received and MOST CALLS DROPPED.  The only reason I'm still with them is my wife is stuck in a plan & most of my friends & clients have had AT&T/Cingular - so a lot of my calls are mobile-to-mobile.  I miss the Analog days where you knew when you could make a call & cellular companies gave a whoot about quality control.  Even a friend of mine was given an iPhone as a gift & she's returning it - says is sucks.  Maybe Apple will get it right on the 2nd Gen and they'll let other carriers go with it too.  Although from Steve Jobs' keynotes, he was stoked about AT&T because of the behemoth size of company that they are.  Too bad Apple is getting served up some guilt by association with AT&T.

Good luck with your new iPhone - cheers!

By the way, the Google Maps feature is really incredible, especially if you dont have GPS navigation system in your car. If you see that in action on your phone you will definitely be impressed. There isn't a GPS in the phone itself so it doesnt give tell you where you are, but the feature is just as good as Google Maps is on the web.

Another cool feature is that you can be listening to your iPod on the phone and when you get a call, the music fades down and you can answer the call with your headphones and when you are done with the call the music automatically fades back up from where you left off. The fact that the music and phone are combined is very convenient. Ive missed many calls while blasting the music on my iPod in the past.

I think that if anyone is looking for absolute perfection in the phone, you may want to hold off. There are still a few areas of improvement that Apple can fix (and probably will with some software updates). But it really is an incredible, ground breaking device. By the way, when I mentioned that it is sometimes hard to hear the caller, I think it is probably the same when you talk from a blackberry which has a similar structure. I'm used to a flip phone which has a large speaker and it cups your ear nicely so I'm just making the adjustment.

By the way, Becker is starting an iPhone photo contest each month so soon you can see the results of the quality of the camera (which I haven't tested yet).

I'm really interested in the Nokia N800 - not a phone, but an Internet tablet running linux. WiFi enabled, uses SD cards as expandable RAM, Outstanding screen. The kicker - SKYPE works well on it. $60 a year for all you can eat calling, from any WiFi hotspot, which for some is almost anywhere. It connects bluetooth through any cell phone to the Internet as well, when not in a WiFi location. For me, a compromise to have 2 devices, but when I don't want to carry a 17 inch laptop, but want better than 2.5 inch internet experience, it may be a good compromise for me.

For those of you who are pissed about why Apple choose AT&T and not Verizon, Apple went to Verizon first and they turned them down and said no. AT&T was smart enough to give into Apple's demands on how they wanted things done (i.e. visual voicemail).

Personally, I've been pretty impressed. EDGE isn't broadband, but it's not bad either.

I agree, it's not the Jesus phone, but in my opinion it competes well with a lot of the other stuff out on the market which is pretty unreal when you think this is Apple's first step into this industry. Blackberry, Treo, Motorolla, have been doing this for years and on Apple's first try they come out with something that's without a doubt more beautiful, sleeker, MUCH more intuitive, than any other product on the market. Sure, it's got a few areas it could improve on, but for what it is, it's pretty dang cool.

Wow. I ported my number over from Sprint and was live on the iPhone in 7 minutes. It is simply the coolest device I have ever owned. People who are constantly griping about the iPhone seem to do so in an effort to generate web traffic.

I think quite a few people who can't get on with the touch screen will just blame the phone instead of maybe themselves. It's totally new and people need to give themselves time to get use to it.

'Intuitive' now there is a word used by Chris that you could never mix up with the word 'Motorolla'. lol. Lost count of the amount of friends who have switched from them to Nokia.

I didn't make these posts to generate web traffic. I seriously considered getting an iPhone, but for the features that I would use, in the way that I would like to use them vs. the cost of the phone and subsequent contract didn't offer me the value that I would like. Hence, I'll wait. Others may find great value in the iPhone and if they do, then they should buy one. I just think that one should research a product based on their needs before buying it instead of just buying something because it is the latest fad. I commend Apple for the technology and the user interface techniques employed on the iPhone. I've always admired Steve Jobs for his visionary contributions to Apple, Pixar, and NeXT over the years.

I have minor complaints, but the iPhone is still the best phone+portable email device ever made. You can't currently use the iPhone with an ATT business account–perhaps that was part of the trouble you're having.

EDGE isn't super fast, but it gets the job done for email.

8GB is a decent amount of space for flash memory. I don't think you'd want a real hard drive in this thing. For me, it's plenty of space (though a card slot would have been nice).

An hour ago, a client was here and had his iPhone out; said he had it a week nd loves it. Neither of us had time for details. Interesting.
He said he rarely buys things when first out, but loves Apple products since 80's!

p.s. I agree - AT&T is horrible...and this product was way beyond what they can handle. I bought mine and couldn't even take it home till the next day because they couldn't figure out how to sell it to me. Weird. The phone and features are pretty cool and fun to play with though. 8 gigs w/ no SD port is dumb too but whatever. I just try and think positive about it and that makes me smile. lol

Activation is a pain, but that's all on At&T, not Apple. No matter how good Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint may be, having them execute a launch this big would be a challenge for them as well. Just image Apple trying to maintain their high standards and dealing with not 1 but 4 carriers!

@zoonenschein and GQ: the iPhone is the best phone I've used in terms of phone functionality. The sound quality is better than the TREO and two different models of Blackberries I've owned. Make three-way calls have never been so easy.

If you're not the early adopter type, then I would suggest you wait.
