LAST NIGHT WE WERE LISTENING TO SOME BANDS IN SANTA BARBARA
And it is so weird to know how fast time goes by.  25 years ago, we used to play in Santa Barbara all the way down to Oxnard in my band called, "Teaser".  We had really great players - the singer, Paul, was with Van Halen way before David Lee Roth, and Mike Eadie was lead guitar and Alan Edelman was the drummer.  The musicians were really good, but Paul was kind of all show and pitchy.
I was a different bass player.  I played fretless and would walk around the crowd and I remember one time when I was mad at everybody else (I presented an original song and Michael Eadie rejected it - jerk) so I went inside one of the frat rooms and played wirelessly from inside the living room.  They were so mad at me because they couldn't find me and whenever a song ended, I would start the riff for "Dazed and Confused".  I think that was about my last night with the band.
We played the frat and sorority parties at UCSB, and played a club in Oxnard.  We would play all night and then we would get like $100 to split four ways.  The only fun I had was because I had a fretless I would run my finger up and down the neck and go WOOOOO.
My favorite bass of all time ever to play with a rock band was my Hofner Violin Bass.  That thing was hollow body, 3/4 scale and had no sustain so it was a thumper.  It was so much fun.
I have played guitar since I was 8 years old, and once you know guitar you can pretty much automatically play the piano, and I've been playing piano since I was 18.  When people come over to the ranch and see all of the instruments, that's why.  I want to start a band again :)

It's too bad you live so far from Chicago!  I'd be in your band!

Like you, I started young as well.  Started out on piano (perhaps around age 7 or 8) and then quit and took up the guitar at age 10... so I've been playing guitar for 39 years!

Also, like you, I play bass and drums too.  So I'm really a one man band right now!  Oh, one of my past band members had a Hofner "Beatle" bass as well.  But he told me one of his kids messed it up!  Ouch!

The next time you are in Chicago, you're going to have to look me up so we can play together.  That would be fun!

I'll tell you what sucks, more like what it is to come in second place, this morning my wife checked the winning Florida Lotto numbers, and discovered that she had picked 5 of 6 winning numbers. Pay offs is a couple grand, (Great and all...) but the 6th number was on a second ticket. How's that for runner up.

This isn-t a surprise given that median home prices are always a lagging indicator of where the market is going. Why is this- Well for one, you-ll notice that the data is for December. Second, most of these homes were purchased in October or November since closing records take time to be publicly recorded, normally two months.  Also, the trend started in 2006 with significant drops in sales which is a leading indicator and a better predictor of future market activity. Sales numbers are still dropping at record levels:

It has finally seeped into the market that the only thing that will move homes is lower rock bottom prices. But given the amount of inventory homes are still not priced right otherwise homes would be moving and we would be seeing improvements in the sales numbers. So what do the folks at DataQuick have to say about these horrifically bad numbers- “It looks like anybody who can, is waiting this thing out. Which of course means that the activity we are seeing right now is largely stressed and atypical. Today’s numbers form a lousy basis for trending and forecasting. We’re in the midst of turbulence and we won’t know what really has been going on until things have settled down and we can look back,” said Marshall Prentice, DataQuick president. I love this. Decreasing sales numbers are nothing new since they-ve been occurring since 2006 and this isn-t a trend- Since we are in “turbulence”, we really don-t have any inkling to what is going on so we will need to wait to find out since the market is so nutty right now. Are you kidding me- Could it be that the housing bubble built over this decade is finally popping due to the credit crunch that we experienced in August of 2007 or the fact that California is practically in a recession without the formal definition- Or could it be the exotic banana republic stuntman mortgages and manic speculation that is no longer there adding fuel to the fire-  The underlying assumption is also that people are perched on a fence waiting to buy if it wasn’t for the scary market.  Nowhere in the report do they say the obvious, housing prices are still too expensive given market fundamentals. Please everyone, the only thing needed was a -to be continued- added to the report. Surely these folks were measured in their response during the good times as well- “The big question now is whether the cycle will play itself out in 2005 with a soft landing or with a turbulent crunch. Right now the soft landing scenario appears the most likely,” Prentice added.- There we go again talking about turbulence. What is going on with the airplane metaphors- Regardless, even three years ago these same people made a prediction at the height of the buying frenzy that most conservative investors saw as unstable yet they went out on a limb and predicted a -soft landing.- Why is it that predictions can only be made when things are going up and not going down. We are at the inverse of 2005 so all you need to do is replace soft with hard and your back in business. Let us take a further look at the bubble over the past few years:

Clearly the peak was reached sometime in 2006 given that the percent increases were dwindling for two consecutive years. After double-digit growth for six consecutive years, how can you call this anything but a bubble- Incomes were not rising at this pace. This correction is rather obvious and we can easily make a prediction in the light of all this -turbulence- and instability. Given the low sales numbers, high inventory, tighter credit markets, declining prices, rising foreclosures, and market sentiment we-ll make the assessment that housing is still trending downward and we can see this accelerate given that March of 2008 will see the largest number of subprime mortgages resetting. Even prime mortgage defaults are rising. I-m sure most of you can see the trend or is it too crazy out there to make any predictions.

I grew up in goleta, right outside of IV. 25 years ago, I was 14 and sneaking into the frat parties, drinking beer and trying (poorly) to flirt with girls at FT. Good times :) Remember the sims skate park behind the tasty freeze on storke road? Liquorice pizza and the graduate? Man, that's the good ol days.. Thanks for the flash back!

With all due respect, how can a guitar player and drummer ever be in Van Halen, when Van Halen is the name of the guitar player and drummer.   Some part of this story doesn't sound right.   And there are plenty of photos and recordings of Van Halen playing live in early 1976.  By 1982 Van Halen had all ready sold millioins of albums.  There first album was released in April 1978.

Speaking of SoCal 80's bands, I saw Jetboy last night at a NAMM jam and they totally rocked the house. Some get old - some get better.

I am about 4 years younger then you but have a similar Rock and Roll past. I was a singer in a band playing gigs at UC Irvine and for rich kid's parties in Newport/Corona Del Mar. One of my HS choir buddies formed and fronted Stone Temple Pilots at around the same time. Some get jobs - and a small few become rockstars.

I started out as a music major in college before switching to Engineering. I had scholarships that were paying for my tuition and housing but still needed more money so I started playing with three different groups. One played at a hotel restaurant providing dinner music with string bass, piano, & drums. When I finished there about 8PM, it was time to travel 30 miles away to a bar called the Mattress Factory, filled with kids my age wanting the latest rock and roll. I was there till about 12 AM and went a couple miles away to a Country Bar called the Candle Light Lounge. I finished up around 3AM and always went to a Waffle House to get breakfast before driving back to my dorm room to collapse. I pulled this off Friday and Saturday every week and also sat in with a group two nights a week at a local bar in town called the Depot.

I had plenty of cash but two years of this took its toll. It got where I dreaded going to work. That much intensive playing helps hone your skill but at a huge price to your sanity. I saw lots of wild fights (more fights between women than men BTW) and inhaled enough cigarette smoke in bar rooms that I'm sure to die of lung cancer eventually. There were times I could not see my instrument the smoke was so thick. Alas, the day finally came that I could not envision myself doing this for a living or starving to death on a teacher's salary. I switched to Engineering with no regrets.

It's kind of like what you said in one of your videos Gary. If you had to hear anymore Kenny G wedding reception music, you might slash your wrists. Anything you do for a living gets old eventually. I tell my children that brain surgeons get tired of what they do and eventually dread going to work. Get into something you can tolerate but makes enough money where you have the means to enjoy your leisure time.

Similarly, I just got back from KSC where we were working the ECO sensor problem and replacing the connector that everyone believes has been causing this intermittent open circuit. I've been on the shuttle program 29 years now and it has become really old for me. There is nothing new but you have to stay focused on perfection. Of course we stop flying in a couple more years and then I'll retire. I'll supplement my meager pension with photography, if the economy doesn't collapse completely as Gary predicts.

What a ripoff! I once worked for a company that held an air tight patent on a unique product. After CBS 60 minutes aired a segment on the product and how the American Gas Association had conspired to prevent the product from coming to market, there were dozens of copycats all over the country.

The patent attorney advised it would cost a fortune to sue them all and even if he won judgment, the company would likely close and be bankrupt. The best he could do was send a letter advising they risked being sued and in many cases a company like this will just cease operation. The attorney also advised that his biggest hope was that a Fortune 500 company would start producing the product. In time he could sue them and likely recover a ton of money in damages. Such a company is not likely to fold over one law suit.
