I"M NOW THE CHURCH LIBRARIAN!!!!

QUESTION OF THE DAY: AFTER THE BIBLE, WHAT BOOK HAVE YOU ENRICHED YOUR SPIRITUAL LIFE?

abar7_e0.gif

Well, I will get back to the atheist thing below some other time...need to do some more analysis, suddenly now I want to deal with another atheist's article...we shall see where this go...I need to learn how to breakthings down more easier...

PLUS, I got finals tommorow!

And today at church I was appointed as the official church librarian!

Wow, that means I get to order new month and write a book review each month of the book I pick! YEAH!

Pray that I woulddo this well over time and its not just some initial excitement...

SO what book has influenced you theologically and tell me about it...really!

The Five People You Meet In Heaven.

Awesome book, I highly recommend it. I believe that when critics sit down to figure out the American classics this book will be high on the list.

Congrats Mr. Librarian. Peace.

I'm glad I checked my site....I got the picture reposted.....take a look. That picture really ministers to me....that beautiful lady kneeling there looked like my Mom....She had me when she was 46 1/2 years old.... I only had her for 28 years....but, I'm looking forward to Eternity with her.  ~Carolyn

Hey Jimmy, glad for the new excitement of being church librarian. My husband, wisdomfomme, knows lots of great books, so I'll tell him to drop you a list. Five People You Meet in Heaven...yes, definitely. I read it all in one morning! Also, I heard a review on "Blink" and really want to read that.

have fun book shopping!

The Circle Trilogy by Ted Dekker

Why? Because it has forced me to look at a facet of God's being in a totally new light. It opened my eyes to the wond'rousness of His love, the intensity, and the all-consuming-ness of it. The sacrifice that was made. It is truly a great series. Also, have not read "5 People You Meet in Heaven" yet, so I can't say a whole lot about that one...

Also, congrats on becoming the church librarian! That would be kinda fun.....

Here is a list of books that have shaped my thinking.  I will more directly answer your question later.
. The Puritan Hope by Iain Murray.  It convinced me of the power of the Holy Spirit to do mighty works yet again, believing that "a nation could be born in one day."

Angels in the Architecture. By Doug Wilson and Doug Jones.  Truth, beauty and goodness.Turning point in my life.

Always Ready: Directions for Defending the Faith by Bahnsen.  This was my first experience of Greg Bahnsen.  I haven't forgotten it.   Calvin's Institutes, while weighty, have played a tremendous role in my thinking.  I am still thinking, but this is a list for starters.

Here are some more

Abraham Kuyper's Lectures on Calvinism.  This was the first conscientious attempt at articulating a Christian worldview.  To be sure, we have moved beyond Kuyper, but he has much good to say.

First and foremost, I would order Greg Bahnsen's debate with Gordon Stein.  This was another turning point in my life.  If you want to get your people fired up about worldview, start here.  Read what people have said about it.  I have listened to the debate about 25 times.  It gets better each time.  Now that I have benefited from Bahnsen's ministry and have fought many fights with humanists and Christian humanists on the primacy of God's word in all areas of life, Greg means so much more to me.  One of the few regrets in my life is that he died before I could meet him.

I would also heartily recommend Vision Forum Ministries.  Here is a list of things that heavily influenced me (they are cds, not books):

Here is the some of the stuff from Vision Forum that changed my worldview within the span of a week.

How to think like a Christian. Witherspoon School of Law and Public Policy Patriots versus Tories Christians versus Deists   Norm Geilser is okay, but he has a few fatal flaws.  If I were an atheist and someone used one of Geisler's Classical/Evidentialist arguments against me, I would bite the bullet and agree with everything he said.  At the end of the day I would turn the tables and say, "So What?  Strange things do happen.  Perhaps a corpse resuccitated.  Science has yet to explain a few things."   Geisler has yet to attack the heart of the unbeliever's worldview.    Gideon, are you familiar with the Transcendental Argument for the existence of God?

Unfortunately, most americans have the attention span of a young kitten, so that is why we have DVDs.  Consider (pricy, I know) these dvds

That's an important job. I so enjoy having access to a Christian library at our church. We have videos and music too.

"Father God, I thank you for Jim and for having your hand on his life. Please bless him in his new position and allow him to be a blessing to many. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen."

Here is an overview of stuff that influenced me (it is on the about me part of my blog)

My worldview has been shaped by John Calvin (Institutes), Abraham Kuyper (Lectures on Calvinism), Herman Bavinck (Reformed Dogmatics: God and Creation, vol. 2), Cornelius Van Til, and Greg Bahnsen.

The book "Exodus" by Leon Uris truly held me in awe of the connection between judaism and christianity . . . God's chosen people who have rejected (or accepted) Christ as Messiah . . . awesome book. Freakin awesome book.

Next week meaning week after THIS? Yes.

The Preacher's Wife is a remake of an old Cary Grant movie about an Angel that comes down to help a pastor and his wife in their struggling marriage . . . and the preacher's going to lose his parish . . . it's a cute story. Stirs me up a little.

HEY Jimmy finals are soon going to be over!!!!!!!!

30 years ago John Robbins was a superb economist and jurisprudential scholar.  He has written the most devastating critique of natural law. period.   However, he canonized the philosophy of Gordon Clark (which has a few fatal wholes in it) and calls anyone stupid who doesn't hold to it.  It is his job to write "horror files" showing how much of a whore Christ's bride really is. I will stop right now.  As yet, I haven't said anything negative of the fan.  I will keep it that way.

Maybe not so weighty as some of the others works discussed here, but I highly recommend The Trilogy by Calvin Miller (InterVarsity Press).  It will appeal to the poet in you, and it's quite beautiful.
