NIGHT WATCH------

A nurse took the tired, anxious serviceman to the bedside.  "Your son is  here," she said to the old man.  She had to repeat the words several times before the patient's eyes opened.

Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack, he dimly saw the young uniformed Marine standing outside the oxygen tent.  He reached out his hand.

The Marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man's limp ones, squeezing a message of love and encouragement.

The nurse brought a chair so that the Marine could sit beside the bed.  All through the night the young Marine sat there in the poorly lighted  ward, holding the old man's hand and offering him words of love and strength.  Occasionally, the nurse suggested that the Marine move away and rest awhile.  He refused.

Whenever the nurse came into the ward, the Marine was oblivious of her and of the night noises of the hospital - the clanking  of the oxygen tank, the laughter of the night staff members exchanging greetings, the cries and moans of the other patients.

Now and then she heard him say a few gentle words.  The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night.  Along towards dawn, the old man died.  The Marine released the now lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse.  While she did what she had to do, he waited.

Finally, she returned.  She started to offer words of sympathy, but the Marine interrupted her.  "Who was that man?" he asked.  The nurse was startled, "He was your father," she answered.  "No, he wasn't," the Marine replied.  "I never saw him before in my life."  "Then why didn't you say something when I took you to him?"

"I knew right away there had been a mistake, but I also knew he needed his son, and his son just wasn't here.  When I realized that he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son, knowing how much he needed me, I stayed "

The next time someone needs you ... just be there.  Stay.

And remember....we are not human beings going through a temporary, spiritual experience.  We are spiritual beings, going through a temporary human experience.

My sister sent this to me today....her husband had sent it to our brother.  Our brother replied back, that this story reminded him of the very thing my brother-in-law had done for our own dad, when he was dying.  My folks had moved in with my sister so that they could be cared for in their last days.  My brother-in-law spent many hours with dad....sometimes quietly, just being there.  Other times talking about baseball....one of my dad's favorite hobbies (his team was the Atlanta Braves).  And at the end, Dale took his turn sitting quietly, holding daddy's hand, speaking quiet, gentle words...loving him...just like the rest of us.  Dad needed him...and Dale was there.

Thanks Dale, for loving my daddy.

BE  A  BLESSING  TO  SOMEONE  TODAY !

So true. Just being there helps tremendously! This story reminds me of my own sweet hubby and the way he has always treated my parents.

When we all stood around Daddy's bedside that afternoon he died, hubby was the one who cried the most.

This really hits close to home today, as Ralph is in the hospital right now.  We went to see him last evening.  Juanita has commented that she thinks he may not ever go back home.

When it comes to painting...well...I'll paint anything I don't like! If I were redoing your cabinets, and hated the wood trim and doors...I'd probably do them too! I'm kind of OCD about how things look

I painted my ugly wood fireplace one weekend, and feeling brave...also painted my dining room table, china cabinet, hutch and all the chairs. They looked so good, I reupholstered them too! Asking me whether or not to paint is the wrong question...I'll always say yes! Ask yourself...do I really want to do it!! If you do...go for it!

Loved reading that- thanks for sharing.  My grandpa died 33 years ago and to this day, my mom talks about how my dad took care of him, shaved him, sat with him, etc. and how much it meant to her for him to do that.

God bless~ Laurel

That is beautiful.  And sooo true!  Sometimes we just need to be there.  Growing up I would just sit in the recliner next to my quiet little grandpa and watch T.V. with him.  He liked that.  I didn't have to say anything, just sit next to him. : )  In the nursing home I try to hold their hands and whisper Jesus name to them and that He loves them.

ryc...I'm sorry, sometimes I think everyone is supposed to automatically know what I'm talking about! lol  The spinach is cooked...  : )

Take care now, Go-go girl!
