A Diagnosis....

Edit:
My daughter has updated her xanga with more details of the illness if anyone wishes to read it.

Hey all,

I thank you all for your prayers for my son in-law Travis.  There are many faithful prayer warriors out there, I know!

We had some sad news today....Travis  found out that he has the auto-immune disease, hypogammaglobulinemia, also called Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID).

It can be genetic or acquired.  It's the same disease the "Bubble Boy" has, but since Travis was diagnosed as an adult and not a child, it appears to be a milder form.  Travis described it as the opposite of leukemia.

The treatment is very expensive ($1,600 a shot) intravenous gamma globulin infusions.  It takes 12 people to donate to make one shot, and a shot is needed every month.  The doctor didn't give them any false hope, but did say he had a gut feeling Travis would improve.

At this point we don't know how this will affect his working and just general living.  Obviously he will be susceptible to catching anything out there.

Travis's spirits are good right now.

There is a possibility that their one year old son Clarke could have the mutated gene as well, although on the surface it doesn't appear that he does.  Only testing would tell for sure.

We know that we serve a great and mighty God.  We know that little family is in His big, strong hands.  We know that all things are possible to those who believe.  We also know that we are to praise and glorify Him in all things.  And that we shall do.....

Thanks for your prayers dear ones,
Beth

Adorable family. I'll be praying for them and that Clark does not have it. Praising God for an accurate diagnosis and that the funds will be there for treatment and that it will keep him healthy and able to work and function normally.

I can't even put into words what I'm feeling right now...maybe later. Our family has seen its share of rare diseases.

How wonderful that the doctor expressed his feeling that Travis will improve! Bad news tempered by optimism makes it much more bearable. And maybe "bad" is relative. This sounds like something he can live with, and some diseases don't offer that hope. (Can you tell I'm trying to write a positive comment???)

That being said, I know that your faith and your acting upon it will make all the difference in how your family deals with this news. I shudder to think how oppressed one would feel about getting a difficult diagnosis if one had not the hope of God's promises with which to face it.

Blessing to you all in the days and weeks to come. They are surely a beautiful little family, and with lots of prayers, love and support they'll come through.

Praying for Travis and your whole family, that God will give wisdom to his doctors and others involved in his care, wisdom for decisions that might have to be made, and that He would make Himself and His purposes and His plan known to all of you and give you His comfort and peace.

I've not been able to get all of you off my mind since hearing the news. I'm sure you have a roller coaster of emotions and thoughts and fears. May the Lord hide you under the shadow of His wings and give you His peace. May He pour His grace on you and give you strength for each day. Love, Linda
