see relatedThen Manoah said to the Angel of the Lord, "What is Your name, that when Your words come to pass we may honor You?" And the Angel of the Lord said to him, "Why do you ask My name, seeing it is wonderful?"
Judges 13:17-18Manoah didn’t know that he was speaking to the Angel of the Lord, so he asks for a name. It’s really no different than what you or I do when we introduce ourselves to others. A name is important; it gives us our identity. So, here we see that the Angel of the Lord gives His identity to Manoah and calls Himself, “Wonderful.” Now, He’s not saying here that He has a wonderful name, rather, He’s saying that His name is Wonderful. Does that sound familiar? Look at Isaiah 9:6:
“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Jesus Himself is called Wonderful. And it is He who appeared to this young family who will have a son. And this is the same Jesus who died on the cross and rose from the grave for your sins. It is this same Jesus who wants a relationship with you—for eternity. It’s this same Jesus who, the Book of Isaiah tells us, has the title of “Mighty God,” “Counselor,” “Everlasting Father,” and “Prince of Peace.” It is Jesus the Messiah, the Redeemer, who is called Wonderful.
Are you struggling with anything today? Do you have worries or fears for your future? Are you concerned about your family, or for your finances, or for your son or daughter in college? Whatever you may be facing, Jesus—the Son of God, the creator of all things—is standing before you. His name is Counselor, so you know without a shadow of a doubt that He will listen to your fears and worries, and He will provide perfect direction. His name is Everlasting Father, so you know that He will always be there for you to care and protect you. His name is Wonderful, so you can be sure that He has wonderful things in store for you. If He can make a barren woman have a son, then He will make wonderful things happen in and through you as well.
