Chang's Garden 樓外樓
Chang's Garden / 樓外樓
627 W Duarte Rd
Arcadia, CA 91007 (626) 445-0606
To the left is the photo of dishes from the restaurant Chang's Garden in Arcadia, Chinese name is 樓外樓.
I love how the Chinese name and the English name are completely different so that my friends can never tell what Chinese restaurant I am referring to when I speak in English...
The translation of the Chinese name of the restaurant is suppose to mean that this restaurant can out do other restaurants I gather, since I guessed it from the phrase 人外有人,天外有天.
The dishes were ok...probably 3.5 out of 5...
The reason being there are some things that are really great, and there are things that are so-so.
The best thing on this table is the seaweed fried fish filet...
(The 2nd dish clockwise from bottom)
It's a pretty good cod.
The second best was the 蟹黃豆腐...which is completely disgusting if I translated it into English...
(Let me know if you wanted me to explain, I'll message you...)
It's basically a tofu dish, using parts of the crab that I doubt any other cultures would use in their food...
It is delicious, nevertheless...
Other dishes are just so so... I can proudly say they are so-so because I've made some of those dishes before, and I am confident to say I know how to make it better...
Hm...maybe I should say they suck, because poor my culinary skill is just eyeballing and make it off of recipes... (I have probably less than 4 dishes memorized...)
However, I would come back here again because they have something that is really rare in restaurants, 蜜汁火腿.

Bubbles
(Another iPhone wallpaper)
A way to describe Los Angeles living is probably bubbles. We wake up in our home bubble, we travel in a car bubble, we go to school/work bubble, get into the car bubble...and so on. There was very little interaction with outsiders. Not that I am an extrovert, but in Taiwan the etiquette is not to disturb people who are strangers; however, I like to invade people's huge invisible wall and talk to strangers. It's funny to watch people startle slightly when I ask for time or direction when they are not expecting to be talked to. This type of action is quite impossible to perform in Los Angeles and may be dangerous.
At least this is what I thought...
Last night I was across the street from the Vista Theater on Sunset, waiting for snowjunky8 to arrive. I started talking to a nice girl standing next to me, asking her about Silver Lake and we had a nice conversation. I didn't feel like I was bothering her at all. This is just one of a few experiences I had in Silver Lake, and I really enjoyed that. I wonder if I should have moved there earlier... It kind of makes me wonder if there were any more of these pleasant neighborhoods that I am missing out on down in LA. I have also realized I don't think it's right to write off LA as "one-type-of-city." (As in...LA is superficial, conclave, segregated neighborhood, and etc) There is still plenty to see out here, and I hope to come back and visit other parts I frequent less before.
Now that I am heading up to SF, I hope I don't make the mistake as I did again. Good bye LA, for the past 7 years of my life. If my life were a school year, I guess I had a really great summer in Los Angeles. -
Dark Knight
This is probably the best super hero film I have ever seen.
There was not a moment where I could pause and reflect on the previous scene, and I didn't feel like any moment of the film was wasted on the slow reflection.
I think this is probably better than the first Dark Knight series.
Although I am not sure if the Joker were really scary or was it my clownphobia doing its stuff...
Speaking of action films, I remember reading it somewhere that in action/horror films there is a formula that an explosion or something scary should happen every X number of seconds to keep audiences interested. If the thrill sequence were too frequent, audiences gets desensitized, but if they were too far apart, audiences feel bored.
I really think Christian Bale is really stiff in this one, compared to the previous movie. All actings from other characters are just really great in the movie.

Santa Monica concert
So there was this small band (according to my friends) called Fall Out Boy playing on Santa Monica Pier on Thursday night and I dragged my friends along. Both of them don't recognize the name until they started playing certain songs.

If you didn't recognize this dog, it's by Victoria Secret. They were hosting the show, so I had to tell my friends that I was going because I needed something for my drag days to convince them why I would want to go.

The event was called Pinkapalooza, and apparently there was some kind of UCLA-USC rivalry going on there...

The only picture that has all of us in it...
It's really difficult to take a self picture with the iPhone...

Of course, the pink phallic symbol!

This beach ball was gigantic if you couldn't tell...
the diameter is about 6 feet long... It was fun for a minute, but some aggressive Santa Monicans trashed the ball within minutes...
(more on aggression at the concert later...)

So finally the concert started exactly on 9! Explosion of flashes!
There were waves and waves of digital cameras, cellphones, and other recording devices raised into midair...
The way we do things has drastically changed within the past 5 years...

So the concert started mellow, most people aren't too excited. The crowd was quite mixed...
A good number of people from teenagers to 50's were there. I've never seen such a crowd for these kind of concerts. I'd think most of them would be college students, but no so. The elders were excited about the concert as well.
Then things got a little out of hand when some kinds started a mush pit. They were trying to body surf some guy who apparently didn't want it, and it generated a lot of animosity. A fight almost broke out. It was not a fun mush pit. Towards the end, I started seeing veins popping out of everyone's forehead... The smile was gone, and everyone who was in it were aimed to maim...
Thank goodness we didn't see blood.
Another thing happened during the concert is we saw a kid throwing up all over a girl standing next to her... Of course we took this opportunity to push forward towards the stage...
At the end of the concert, people were just flinging random stuff into the air, and a water bottle crashed on top of my friend's head...
It was her first US rock concert, and I think this would be quite memorable to her.

After that we just fed my other friend to the dog and went home.

2 Sushi places in LA
The good:
Takumi from Little Tokyo - The fish is extremely fresh. Probably the best freshness & quality I've tasted out there in LA. I prefer fatty fish.
I'd probably go tell the sushi chef how much I'd be willing to spend and he'll do something about it rather than ordering from a set menu.

This is the $100 plate sashimi
The bad:
Sasabune from Westwood - Despite the 4.5 star rating on yelp.com, I can't believe people liked this place. When I went, the omakase costs $80 each. Every sushi was terrible. The nigiri fell apart when I tried to pick it up with my hands or the chopsticks. The staff is so busy that they rarely acknowledge when I tried to get their attention. The worst thing is since the sushi rice is hot (yes, I don't know what they are thinking...) it sort of cooks the fish on top of it and brings out the half cooked fishy taste in each sushi. I'd be ashamed of myself if I were that chef for putting something like this out.
I might be snobby but I don't really think people have the pallet to taste what fresh & good food is...
.
Just look at how bad the quality was...
Uni was unfresh, horrible looking and falling apart.
