So, I am at this point where I am quite introverted, and don't actively seek out to socialize with others. In school I am not making any big discoveries, but am taking every bit of knowledge in. People have been commenting on how nerdy I am with my actions and the references I make, especially towards primatology and anthropomorphism...
Sheening is worried I might be more interested in primates than humans lately and would become someone like Diane Fossy or Jane Goodall...
Most of my time is just spent reading and doing statistics in the lab, trying to find correlation of how one action might be related to another.
One of my recent finding is in a mentoring relationship, positive feelings between a mentor and mentee are correlated. It's not a ground breaking discovery, but it does strengthen school's funding for the mentorship programs.
My next study is on whether there is a difference in relationship quality if the mentor and mentees contacted in person, phone, or through texting/e-mailing. None of these are too groundbreaking, now that I think of it. However, it's comfortable sitting here analyzing all kinds of variables.

Nerd?? More like Asian surfer gourmand =P
@snowjunky8 - hahah...ok
I've been eating a lot...
relationship...
@zozoyork - what about it?
@gyjcwang - oh just found it interesting to mentor relationship =)
It's great that you are researching on those topics. People usually don't appreciate the nuances of these studies and see the results as common sense after-the-fact. I am especially interested in learning about the outcome of your latest study. I don't know what your hypothesis is, but my suspicion is that people think that personal face-to-face interactions are the most gratifying. To me, however, a prompt and sensitive email is all it takes to make me happy sometimes. I can also read and re-read the message at my own time to create favorable impression of the mentor (I am just dreamy....lol). Maybe the length of the relationship is a confound too!?
@Blizzardi - That's something that I want to bring up at my meeting, maybe the sample we have is not representative of the population and the correlation would not be reliable...
It really depends on the personality of mentor and mentee...
whether or not they are more comfortable with e-mails and texting or talking to an actual person...
You probably noticed as well that on certain occasions these words on screen can't convey your expressions well, or sometimes it's just too difficult to articulate....
but my hypothesis is that it wouldn't matter because kids today are so used to electronic communication
Then again, as I am thinking all of this a lot of questions pop into my head...I will have to try not to let me thoughts get too diffused...
Interesting! So mentors from another era are less receptive from the electronic mode of communication!
Research is so exciting! You are not the lonely nerd around...LOL~
I am learning about mentoring! It seems it takes two to tango. Both mentie and mentor have to work hard to make the process work. It is not easy sometimes!
Just for the record, I like the nerdy side of you. Can we get you a pair of thick-rimmed glasses too? ;)
Don't get so caught up in researching relationships that you don't end up experiencing them first-hand!
Where do you live these days anyways???
@whonose - In the lab...
hahah...I mean LA...for another month or so...
