I just realized something. And I realize that this realization came 14 years/1 month late, depending on your level of optimism/pessimism. Singlish is like, the brainchild of a super genius/a bunch of FOB super geniuses. (Haha imagine this fresh-off-the-boat fisherman going, "Wah piang eh, you Engrish spiking angmos/guailos dun underes..es...es..tim..tim.. AIYA dun kan bu qi wo men la(look down on us)! Our Engrish juz as powderful can!") The genius lies in the ability to convey a message in less than 5 Singlish words when it would take like 10 English words to convey the same message. Trying to explain the meaning of a certain phrase in, say, Mandarin? Whip out your Singlish power, use it like there's no tomorrow. Sounds alot less posh, but hey that's the beauty in Singlish. Fits into your machine-gun speech. A month ago, I was trying to explain what "Hai bu shi yin wei ni?" meant to a certain bum who doesn't speak much Mandarin. In proper English. Me: Well it means...um...it's all because of you? Wait no no, isn't it because of you? (Actually I was trying to get him to guess what it meant) Doesn't sound right. I was listening to the song where that phrase came from last night and suddenly the answer popped into my head. Using Singlish, a uber ahlian-ish tone and an even more ahlian-ish stare, I can explain that in 2 words: "You la!" Yeah, a month ago. This is where you scream, "Sloooowwwwww." And if you decide to be really annoying, you can point out that I've lived in Singapore for like 14 years of my life, which is also like my WHOLE LIFE and never came to this realization until now. Thank you for pointing that out. I wouldn't have realized my utter idiocy if it weren't for you. Then again you can also point out the even more baffling stupidity of the government, who decided to undermine the genius of Singlish and start this thing called the Speak Good English Movement(SGEM). Like, duh. Wait I'm not suppose to say this, I am still a Singaporean citizen, might just receive an oh-so-sweet love letter from the government telling me to stop calling them dumb...Then again I am in Aussieland.
