Hate to Ruin it for You

From this Yahoo! foods article comes a listing of this summer's popular drinks:
  • Krispy Kreme Mocha Dream Chiller = 670 Calories, 28g Fat
  • Dairy Queen Peanut Butter Malt = 870 Calories, 46g Fat
  • Starbucks Double Chocolate Chip Frap Blended Creme = 580 Calories, 22g Fat
  • Dunkin' Donuts Vanilla Bean Coolatta = 440 Calories, 17g Fat
What happened to that good ol' H20?  This is one of the reasons why America has an obesity problem.

To put things in perspective:

1 Starbucks Double Chocolate Chip Frap has more calories than 2 Snickers Candy Bar (each bar is 280 calories and 14g Fat)

My Thoughts on "Hanging Out"

I've been thinking about this a lot in the past few weeks, this "hanging out" thing.  What is it exactly?  What does it all mean?  It's been knocked around sideways, tipped over, pulled apart, put back together in my mind.  Time to get it down on (electronic) paper.

To be honest, the idea or concept of "hanging out" is completely foreign to me.  Ever since grade school when I would eat lunch and read the comics by myself in the school library, I have felt outside of the circle.  Large groups of people often intimidate me and make me feel uneasy.  It's probably due to my overly-observant personality combined with copious amounts of concurrent stimuli from all the voices and actions.  However, this sense of uneasiness doesn't happen all the time.  Sometimes large groups of people are great.  Smaller groups of people are great too.  I couldn't explain why I feel uneasy at times and completely fine other times.

Well, through some much needed introspection and observations in the past three weeks or so, I think I've come close to figuring my behavior reactions.  When it comes to "hanging out", I hate it when there's no purpose; when people just get together to "hang", to hang, or to whatever.  Maybe it's a curse that I'm an engineer, because I believe everything needs a purpose or some have sort of practicality.  So when I see people "hanging out" for the sake of hanging out, I would feel like time is wasted.  They're wasting their lives sitting around, playing dumb drinking games, and pretending like it's such a fulfilling experience.  Is it that awesome to be able to hold your liquor?  What about staying up till 5am just because it's the weekend and you have nothing else to do?

An exception to this rule is to "hang out" with a purpose like getting to know one another.  How are you friends doing this week?  What problems are they having?  What makes them happy, sad, angry, confused?  If you're such good friends with one another cause you hang out so much, then you should be able to tell me at least three things that makes them happy,  three things that occured in their lives this week, or three things that they need help with.

Sometimes people hang out because they're bored or they're just looking for something to do.  Well, if you're bored, learn something or learn about your friends.  If you're want to do something, do something constructive.  Cook a nice meal for someone.  If you want to connect with others, get to know their true self and what's inside.  Don't sit around, getting addicted to useless things, figuring out how to grow your circle on friendster, or pump empty calories into your body.  Life is just too dumb short, don't let it go to waste like that.

So back to my personal reactions.  I've realized that I only feel uneasy when I'm hanging out for the sake of hanging out.  Just because other people are doing it, and therefore I must.  Stupid mentality and be my own person.  When there's nothing going on except for a bunch of people pretending to have fun and pretending to understand each other, everything just seems so surface-level.  In those situations, I feel like I should be doing something but I'm not.  I'd much rather go sip a cup of tea (or beer) with one, two or a few individuals with the purpose of finding out what's within others.

Who are you really?  Cause I'm fascinated.

My Refuge

In my mind,
a raging storm.
Why am I here?
What's the point?
Answers unknown.

The laughters
of the children,
bring me joy.
And an escape
from my head.

In the numerous
words on a page,
I find solace.
Fleeting into
an unfolding story.

Dreams within dreams,
I welcome you.
Whisk me away
into the adventures
of my soul.

My refuge.
Are you a what?
are you a where?
Are you a who?
Please come soon.
