Have I even mentioned to you that I have reoccurring nightmares about tornadoes? Since I was a child- in fact- since as long as I could remember even having dreams. Yep- woke up tonight with one. The most fascinating thing about them is, they are ALWAYS different. Never the same location, time of day, or season. I am always with different people and yet on occasion, I am alone. Sometimes there are many tornados like 6 or 7 in the distance and other times I am inside them. The tornadoes can look different too. Most are traditional and dark sky gray and thin. Others are huge and overwhelming and a few... are white. Tonight's tornado was only forming. It was raining around dusk and warm in some parking lot. I was with 2 research students from work who I didn't know. Doug from work was there and he had a friend with him from work who I didn't know. I gave one of the girls a clear plastic folder to keep her work from getting wet although my work was going to get drenched. I guess I was doing my job and being nice. Both girls ran home before it got bad. Doug however was running around as the storm was getting stronger. I saw the first one develop in the form of rotating rain and wind on the ground. It was small and wild yet not at all in the air yet. Doug and friend were at first running after it pointing. (Like those poor people did at the tsunami before the waves came rushing in! Uggh!) I think I knew what was coming and was trying to shout to warn them, but the wind was strong and loud and it kept reforming. Well as all dreams go- things got strange and I retreated- I went and knocked on the back door of my neighbors house- MY NEIGHBOR from when I was a child! Weird! I work up before I could get in. I think when things get too weird I wake up. Although I can't say that is always a relief. A lot of times I am being terrorized for what seems hours and as I mentioned sometimes I am actually up in one- only to fall to the ground. So it is not like waking up helps too much. It runs the gamete sometimes... When I have more of these, I will post. If for anything, just to document the strangeness of it all... (I did analyze the meaning of tornado dreams a long time ago-Here is what one person says: "Tornadoes in dreams consistently represent fears of separation from our families. I often wonder if this is because so many of us, in the USA, grew up watching “The Wizard of Oz” (where Dorothy is separated from her family by a tornado). Or if it, more likely, is due to the fact that, during a tornado, our immediate thoughts and concerns are to locate and assure the safety of our families - as soon as possible.
Tornadoes also are sudden storms. They are hard to predict, and the devastation that trails in their wake is severe. Accordingly, tornadoes also can symbolize “violent” and “unpredictable” events in our lives - and personalities that we know." Other places say longer more deeper things like this site:http://www.jeremytaylor.com/pages/tornadoes_storms.html
It is clear to me that it is something that I will have forever- and in a strange way, I am strangely happy to have something a bit weird and unique keeping me in touch with emotions... no matter how terrifying at times...) Happy Dreaming!
Thank you NASA GOV for this image! EDIT: Here is an old digital image I made a LONG time ago. The original image was an old image of my dad from 1970, a year after I was born. He was just posing in a field way out in Northern Baltimore County. I created the image of the tornado in Photoshop and made everything look blurry, painterly and surreal... it was just created for fun one night...
