  • City Bee, Country Bee

Can I just tell you how much I love the zipcar?!  I've already driven 3 cars in the past week - a Volkswagon Jetta, a Mini Cooper, and a Volvo S40.  I'm from LA so I love driving, and I missed it so much!

I've been driving upstate to take Sparky the cat to her vet appointments in a small town called Newburgh.  It's really heightened my already intense desire to move out of the city.  I know part of me will regret leaving the city, since most of my friends are here and everything happens in the city!  But I like houses and yards.  I want to throw dinner parties and barbecues and do all the things that people with houses do.  I'll even force my dad to build me a pond and waterfall of my very own.

I've lived in cities for most of my life, and I'm just much more of a suburban/rural gal.  But Mr. Bee grew up in the burbs and hates them -- he definitely prefers living in the city.

If we did move, ideally it'd be within 45 minutes of the city, and accessible by public transportation.  I'm not really familiar with any cities outside of Manhattan, but I'd love to move upstate.

It's not a possibility in the near future unfortunately, so I'll continue to daydream for now....

haha ... force ur dad to build u a pond?  i'm sure he'd gladly come to build it for you if you ask nicely!

  • myhomelessheart

is the zipcar affordable?  it probably makes a lot more sense on the east coast or when you're traveling to get a zipcar.

wow, i figured you were a city gal and that's why you've been in new york so long!  i go back and forth between wanting to live in a big city with mass transit and living in the 'burbs and having the "freedom" of driving a car around... what do you like best about the city?

  • justbee

@myhomelessheart - the zipcar is $8 an hour, or $60 for 24 hours.  It includes gas and insurance, and with gas prices these days, that's really a bargain!

i am totally not a city girl.  i always knew we wouldn't live here forever.  but i do love how much there is to do here, how convenient everything is.... but i could give all that up for a house in a nice, safe, quiet place.

  • zontiago

i hate the burbs. when i moved back to LA i missed the city and NYC too much.

  • justbee

@zontiago - that's cuz you're single.  talk to me when you've been married for 3+ years and have 2 cats like I do.

  • Pinkity_Pink

I was born in Newburgh, NY!!!!!!

    manhattan's not a city. :X

have you thought about queens?  certain parts can be a decent compromise between city and suburban life.  you can have your yard and be close to the action too.

  • justbee

@CreativeMinority - not really a fan of queens.  mr. bee likes rural but not suburbs.  either or are fine with me.  to me, queens is pretty much the same as the city.

  • CreativeMinority

well it's really not if you go to places like east flushing and douglaston.  you can take the train right into the city.
or if you like upstate, there's always white plains, scarsdale, etc.  and there are lots of rural type places anywhere up the hudson.
in any case, good luck.  spend time looking around and see what you like.

zip cars are beginning to get into the LA area, but not sure how well it will do here since everyone already driving has a car here.

  • GeLLiBeLLy

this past weekend when we were in santa clara, i saw a zipcar for the very first time.  it was a toyota corolla.  it's such a great idea!

  • MiracleMax

the suburbs rule.  you get to drive to the grocery store, the dry cleaners, Target, your friend's house, the movie theater, the restaurant AND you get to drive to....  the city!

  • elatedbliss

i grew up in westchester county and every time i go back home, even for a night, i realize how much i miss it. the quiet nights, the driving on nice sunny days, quaint towns and yes, houses with yards. HA. once i get married, i'd want to move back.

i would recommend westchester for sure. it's close enough to commute to the city and far enough where its the suburbs. Or you can move to NJ like hoboken or west new york. bergen county is OK and they are building like crazy over there - so much that prices are falling becasue there are too many new houses and not enough buyers. but for me, i dont want to expose my kids to TOO much korean, i think its a good place if you're thinking of just living for a few years. you can rent entire houses, for probably less then your current rent in ny. my brother and friends just rented an house in pal park, like a real, HUGE three bedroom house with 2 car garage and a fenced in back yard, newly built, for 3k a month. they have so much space that they dont know what to do with it. but best bet for settling down for good with a purchase? probably westchester.... winsor's sister lives in westchester and i just love the neighborhood. but then again it looks just like most parts of NJ (but a lot of NY-ers for some reason refuse to live in NJ).

  • heavenbound1004

mrs. bee, you can come move to pal park and be close to mrs. ladybug, eugy, and me!!

  • PetiteMandoo

    YA! move to pal park!

  • angelahappydot

hehe you are so cute. keep on renting those zipcars! who knows? you'll be what's her name, monica and chandler on friends who wanted to move out of the city!

  • kjlee78

that zipcar thiing is a good deal considering how freaken expensive gas is right now.  i want to cry whenever i fill up my car.  man i love the suburbs.  i'm so not a city girl.  i can't imagine living in the city, especially downtown la/santa monica.  it was fun living in sf that one year but i hated it at the same time.  i missed the burbs too much.  i know what you mean, i totally look forward to having my own cute house and family in a nice quite suburban neighborhood.  it's going to be exciting when you actually buy your first house later!!

  • joyful_tash

all the food posts on your site make me hungry throughout the day.  it's great eye candy!  thank you!

  • EDacIouSX

if you move out of the city what will you do for work? and, if you gotta drive back into the city have fun with that commute. :/. NYC city is so different than L.A. city. I live in l.a. and i've been to NYC, not sure if you live in the NYC but man, i would not like to live there that's for sure. everyone lives ontop of each other

  • DiORABLEBoMBSHELL___x

hey <3 wow 3 diff cars! i`m def subbing to u!

  • stellaparkkim

a friend just moved to garrison, ny. this is the perfect rural but with urban sensibilities town only one hour from the city.  a lot of newyorkers have weekend homes there.

  • RunningWithScalpels

See, that's my problem. If & when I move to New York, I would have to have some way to come back here to Connecticut and get away from it all once in a while.

As long as it's accessible by Metro-North, I'm game =]

  • TheTheologiansCafe

I like being around the big city but not living directly in it.  I live in Katy which gives me access to Houston.
