  • Stuff (Remember George Carlin's "My Stuff" routine?)

Things are happening so quickly now. With packing and planning and crossing items off the to-do list, we are not sleeping much. I know that cindyjg  just moved, and most likely that was recent enough for her to feel my pain. We have given dozens of  bags and boxes to the Salvation Army and Safe Nest, and yet there is still so much stuff!

I had a roommate once, Rocky Malloy. He was great. One of the best roommates anyone could ask for- he had Texas manners, was full of stories from his merchant marine career, and was nearly always cheerful and optimistic.  He went to church one Sunday night, saw a presentation there by Salt and Light Ministries (http://www.saltlight.org/homepage), and one month later he was in Honduras starting a new life, nothing holding him back. I remember, at the time, admiring how it took him less than three hours to pack all of his posessions up in just a few boxes. It took me about that long yesterday to pack the contents of  one closet, one dresser, and the under-the-sink/medicine cabinet stuff from the bathroom.

    We need to simplify.

  • We've moved 3 times in the last year and a half. The last time was just 2 months ago, so I totally know what you mean about STUFF!!!

    I definitely want to simplify.

  • While we're not moving any time soon, I have been giving a half-hearted attempt at decluttering.  Our garbage man is going to have a heart attack tomorrow given the amount of stuff we purged from our three-season porch (a.k.a., the dump), most it from when we moved in here 7 years ago.  This doesn't even touch on the massive pile of boxes and bags we have to donate.  We have way too much stuff.  Dh wanted to know why I didn't get rid of more kitchen stuff off the porch, where it is stored.  (Since I have zero storage in my kitchen and love to cook/bake, I have a lot of stuff that isn't stored in my kitchen.)  My argument is that I would have plenty of storage space in the basement if he would just get rid of his mounds and mounds and mounds of books and magazines, many of the later of which date from more than a decade ago.  You see the problem.

Anyway, I feel your pain.  Good luck!

  • I love merchant marines. They have the best stories. I am not moving again. Until I find my retirement home. If I ever retire. Still looking for that elusive career...hahaha...the last time we moved, when we moved into our new house here, I started about 6 months prior to the actual move, bought every tote I could get my hands on, closed my eyes and started tossing. Got rid of a lot of stuff I didn't really need anymore. My motto: If you haven't used it in a year, chances are you don't need it. Except collectibles, sentimentals, things of that ilk. Good luck. Best advice: Duct Tape. The handyman's best friend. hahahaha

  • There was a time that everything I owed, including books and furniture, could be crammed into a Honda Civic. Now, I need a cargo ship just for the books alone. I really should simplfy and get rid of stuff. ~ L

  • Me, too.  We are TRYING to gradually downsize.  it's harder than it looks.  Good luck with the packing.
