 A day at the matches...

Bart Kapitzke approaches his AWS shows differently than any other promoter I've ever encountered. Bart wants every style of wrestling represented - something for everyone - in cards that are smorgasbords of ring styles from around the world. Today was no different, as the card featured Japanese-styled workers like Brian "American Dragon" Danielson and PWG's Super Dragon to East Coast extreme high flyer Ruckus to WWE-trained Kenny King, with harcore guys like Supreme and Messiah and lucha libre imports like Sicodelico Jr., Misterioso, and legends like Kendo and the orginal El Matematico.

Great thing about these shows is you're exposed to a ton of talent. Bad thing can be crowds being real hot and then real cold depending on what's in the ring.

Super Dragon - SoCal's most vicious competitor - with hoods made by Cacao Planning of Japan.

Dragon and fellow Revolution Pro alum Quicksilver dump "Photogenic" Chris Bosh out of the ring while SoCal's new masked referree "Stripes" looks on. Stripes rules...

In the past few years, Sicodelico Jr. has bulked up from cruiserweight and is now a real chip of the old family block. He's starting to really look like uncles Mil Mascaras and Dos Caras, but retains a unique arsenal of twirling and spinning moves complementary of his father's ring gear.

The original Kendo, part of Mexico's late 70's to mid 80's wave of Oriental and Martial Arts themed luchadores (along with guys like Kung-Fu, Takeda, and eventually Octagon and Ultimo Dragon), can still really move and has a snap to his stiff MA moves. He's also an astute ring comedian, here complaining about a foul.

The original El Matematico, with his famed number-laden hood. Despite his age, this returning legend on a nostalgia tour still busted out some classic lucha offense.

Surprise of the day was the sudden appearance of 70's-modelled heels "Spymaster 1" and "Spymaster 2" complete with loudmouth Southern manager! They pulled the old 'twin-switch' in the ring, and even dusted off the "Asiatic Spike" finisher (note the taped thumb on #2). SO COOL! Best thing is, these are two well-known workers who've been out of the SoCal scene for a bit, returning on the lam. There was a lot of speculation in the crowd as to who the men were, which is EXACTLY the point... great stuff!

Buy of the day was these two new imported figures from Japan's "Character Product" line that has included all sorts of New Japan wrestlers, MMA guys, legends like Baba and Stan Hansen, etc. and so forth.

The astounding Mil Mascaras figure with Azteca armor and headress is modelled directly off an elaborate ring entrance outfit he toured Japan with in the 80's and 90's. The costume is removable, and silver glitter accentuates the hood. A second over mask, with the variant bat design, is included. WOW! Just as impressive in it's own right is the Doc Caras figure, which is simpler, but CLASSIC lucha in both costume color and pose. Anyone with a lucha mag from the previous three decades has seen Dos in this exact pose, and the sculpture is amazing. Paid through the nose for these, but well worth it IMO.
