Should have written this up last week, but life has been...complicated....of late.
So in our last D20 Modern game, the PCs are facing a high level vampire, with a mountain of levels in Charismatic and nearly as many in Archaic Weaponmaster, making him a smooth talker who can take you head off with a sword. He was wielding a weapon I was especially proud of, the Blade Of Blood and Bone, a +2 Wounding Longsword with the added advantage that he could deal his level-draining slams with it. His Defense was 32. All in all, a seriously tough customer.
So the only person doing him any harm was the mage tossing Magic Missiles at him. After two or three volleys, he decided to do something about the pest. He ignores the risk of Attacks Of Opportunity, because, after all, no one had hurt him yet...
See, in D20, there's not many ways to kill a vampire for real and for true. One of the few is to roll a natural 20 when wielding a wooden stake, generating a threat (even though vamps are normally immune to critical hits) and then confirming said threat.
So when Kim (Celia's character) took said Attack Of Opportunity, it didn't seem like much was going on.
Then she rolled a 20.
Then she confirmed with a total attack roll of 39, despite a bunch of negative levels.
And my Vampire Lord goes 'poof'.
And the GM (i.e, me) just kind of goes "hommina hommina hommina".
Let the dice fall where they may...

What can I say? Losing a round to pull out the stake and another to charge it into a Slayer Weapon was well worth it. +10 BAB, +5 STR, +3 Slayer Magic Enhancement, -4 Negative Levels is still a +14 to hit.
