...about the upcoming
Transformers movie. Of course, I'm going to see it even if it rates at -5% on
Rotten Tomatoes, but I'm trying to set my expectation levels. On the one hand,
this trailer is very cool. On the other hand, trailers lie, and
Bey's last film was an unacknowledged remake of
The Clonus Horror. The other thing which worries me is that, so far, we've heard no Transformers speaking. The movie is called "
The Transformers", not "Me and My Girlfriend Meet Some Cool Giant Robots". The thing which was most appealing about the TFs was that they were fully sentient robots, not piloted
mecha or remote controlled war machines. The story was about people -- people who happened to be millions of years old and made of metal. Each Transformer came with a card detailing (to the extent two sentences counts as "detail") his (rarely her) personality. That's what made them cool, and that's why there's a
BotCon today, 22 years later, and not a JoeCon or MyLittlePonyCon or a ThundercatsCon. Obviously, the movie has to appeal to way more than just Transfans,. but it has to remember that the reason there
are Transfans is because the Transformers themselves were interesting characters whom we cared about. It's worth noting most fanfic either kills off or ignores the humans tossed in so kids had someone to "identify" with. (Note to
marketroids -- kids don't want to identify with kids. They want to identify with, or imagine being, cool 50 foot transforming robots. Not their shlub kid sidekick.)
EDIT: Apparently, there is a
Ponycon. Lizard takes 2d6 SAN loss.

YO JOE!
Plus there was a commercial or clip somewhere that had Optimus Prime speaking. The intarweb was abuzz about how lame it was that Prime's lips were moving....
