  • Chaos, Confusion, The Lion King....

    Life continues.

So. Last night, we went to see The Lion King in Louisville. First, confused over which theater it was in, I parked near to AH. Then it started to rain. Hard. Then we realized that Main Street was a lot further away than we'd thought. So I walk back in the rain to the car and drive up to a closer garage. Between time lost walking and time lost parking and being far away from where I thought we were going to be, plans to "Hit 4th Street Live, go to Borders, and eat a nice dinner somewhere" were dashed. Ultimately, we ended up at a nice Mexican place across from the theater. Low prices and very good food, and near to a lot of L-Ville attractions like the Science Center and the Louisville Slugger museum. (Peanuts special there all summer).

While we're on our way out of the garage, we get a call. Not from my mother, but from a family friend who is staying with her. Apparently, my Mom is turning into a total basket case. Well, more of one than usual, so, if you know my Mom (and a lot of you do, may whatever powers you worship have mercy on your souls), you can barely imagine the state she is in. This led to me being asked to go down there before my Grandfather dies to take care of her. This is one of those situations where being too rational and too logical really, really, sucks. Emotionally, I do not want to do this. Logically, I am aware it is the only choice. If we go down there before he actually passes, it will be easier than rushing to Florida and then rushing to New York. I can bring my laptop and do my coding and writing work anywhere. It will most likely not greatly increase the amount of time involved. We can get open-ended return flight tickets. Etc, etc, etc. There are times when Mr. Logic is a most unwelcome house guest. If I allowed my emotions to rule, I'd just put my foot down and say, no, this wasn't the deal. I said I'd go down when I needed to, and that's that. But it's not possible for me to be that way. Presented with an airtight case as to why this is the most practical solution, I have to just accept it and get on with it. Sigh.

    Anyway. Lion King.

I think it was AH or LL who said something like "The opening is spectacular, but after that. it's The Lion King". A fair enough assessment, though the clever costuming, set design, and choreography continued throughout the play. The acting was good, and the guy playing Mustafa had one HELL of a voice. The use of lighting, translucent cloth, and  moving set pieces to  evoke mood and feeling was very well done. The story was, well, the Lion King, with a handful of changes to suit the theatrical performance and I think some more songs. Of course, it was hard to hear "Hakuna Matata" without thinking of either this or this. Overall, extremely enjoyable and well done. Recommended. My only qualm was that it was often hard to hear the words over the music, but this might have been because we were in the very, very, very, back row. I'd heard the term "Nosebleed section" before, but never fully understood it until now.

Might as well start packing. Sigh.
