  • Uhm....no. No no no no no. No.

This is not what the Watchmen look like.

The whole *point* of Watchmen is that the characters don't look superheroic. They're drawn as ordinary men and women (modulus Dr. Manhattan, of course), and they wear clothing which isn't painted-on skin-tight shiny leather. They look like normal shmucks who put on tights and go beat people up, and the inherent absurdity of that -- and what kind of neurotic (or psychotic, in Rorschach's case) you have to be to do it is the main thrust of Moore's deconstructionist opus.

I'm afraid this is going to turn into a bog-standard superhero flick. I think the people in charge believe the American public won't grasp the laser-sharp criticism of the genre which was Moore's intent (before he grew up and realized that comics were actually fun and he was being a poncy 20-something with something to prove[1]), and the sad truth is, they're probably right.

[1]Well, Moore's never said as much, but the difference between the deconstructionism of Watchmen and Mister Miracle, and the reconstructionism of Supreme, is pretty telling.

Yes yes yes! I think they look awesome. C'mon, they're instantly recognizable, and they're what we (current culture) assume superheroes look like. I think it's fine that they don't look like TV-Batman spandex-wearing crimefighters. I think "Watchmen" was meant to be timeless (the electric cars mean it's obviously not *our* Earth), and even if a lot of the story is reminiscent of a bygone era, that doesn't have to mean the costumes are cheesy. From the stills I've seen (via you), it looks like they're really trying to be faithful to the book.
