The Best Damn Thing
By Avril Lavigne
see relatedOne of my favorite singers right now is Avril Lavigne. I have all of her albums and B-side singles. I know the lyrics to upwards of 80% of her songs. I have tickets to see her in concert this coming May. There is no doubt in my mind that I am her biggest 30-year old Filipino optometrist fan. But, despite my admiration for her, I will admit that she might not be the brightest bulb in the chandelier. When Let Go first hit the charts in 2002, she was a 17-year old tomboy in a tie and a wife-beater who sang about sk8ers and bois. When her second album, Under My Skin, was released two years later, she was a bit more mature (and Gothic), and she sang about more serious topics, such as sex, depression, and suicide. Her third album, The Best Damn Thing, was released in 2007, and this revealed a completely different Avril. She colored her hair strikingly blonde, wore a skirt, and started dancing in her videos. Her music became blatantly pop, and many of her fans felt betrayed by her new sound. When asked in numerous interviews about it, she said that she’s not seventeen anymore, and her new sound is just a reflection of her growing up. And therein lies the paradox. She is six years older from when her first album debuted, but if you’ve ever heard the boneheaded lyrics to Girlfriend, you would think that it was written by a 12-year old on the verge of puberty. Her entire third album is the epitome of girly bubblegum-pop, and she’s kind of delusional if she thinks her music is more grown-up. Based on her music, Avril is not getting older; in fact, she may be the only person in the world who is actually going backwards in time and getting younger. (Barry Bonds is getting younger, too, but he uses drugs.) I love Avril Lavigne, but she’s kind of a dumbass.
This is not to say that I don’t like The Best Damn Thing. In fact, I think it’s her best damn album. But, I can certainly understand why some of her older fans were turned off by it. It’s a far departure from what her older songs sounded like. This phenomenon is nothing new to music. At some point in an artist’s career (this is usually their third album), they try new things and explore their creativity, which often leaves their fans confused and befuddled. This happened to the rap group BDP. Their first two albums are widely considered to be the pioneering gangsta rap albums, but KRS-One flipped the switch on their third album Ghetto Music in 1989 and started rapping about Moses and Jesus Christ. This happened to Liz Phair in 1998 when she released whitechocolatespaceegg. The album had a happier tone than her first two albums, which sounded much more rugged and raw. By the time Liz released her fifth album, it seemed as if she had completely abandoned her rock grrl persona and was completely immersed in making adult-contemporary music. I distinctly remember buying this CD at Tower Records two years ago. The girl at the counter said that she used to be a big Liz Phair fan, but she swore that she would never listen to her again because she was so put off by her fourth album, which was panned by critics who said that it cemented Liz Phair’s crossover into pop music. The Tower Records girl said that Liz has been letting her down since 2003, and she just didn’t want to support her anymore.
That seemed fair. No one should have to listen to music they don’t like, and no one is ever obligated to buy anyone’s album. However, what struck me as unreasonable was the remark about not listening to Liz Phair ever again because Liz "let her down." I can understand not liking a product that’s put out, but I can’t understand being “let down” by the artist. Being “let down” implies that you expect something from the artist, but the reality is that the artist doesn’t owe you anything at all. Being a fan doesn’t give you the right to dictate what type of music an artist puts out. Avril Lavigne and Liz Phair are free-thinking human beings who can make any type of music they want, and they’re under no obligation to make the type of music you feel you’re entitled to.
Unfortunately, this sense of entitlement is permeating throughout society. When The Sopranos abruptly ended its run (literally), many of their fans cried that the last episode was a great injustice to a great show. When George Lucas released The Phantom Menace in 1999, many Star Wars fans claimed that it wasn’t worth the 16-year wait and that they deserved a better movie. And quite recently, I’ve noticed the entitlement plague in something that affects my everyday life. Recently I came across a few blogs where people have been griping about all the new changes that have been occurring on Xanga. Apparently there are people who do not like things like ratings, stars, Themes, Minis, the new personal page, the LIFE logo, and the TRUE campaign. Some bloggers have gone so far as to totally quit Xanga for websites like LiveJournal and Blogger. It seems that the prevailing theme from these blogs has been “I’ve been on Xanga for years and years and they keep changing things and I don’t like it.” Basically, they feel that Xanga has done something wrong to them.
I really can’t comprehend why these people feel the way that they feel. I can understand having an opinion (either positive or negative) about the new features, but it baffles me that people feel betrayed by Xanga. As far as I know, Xanga is a private company that can do whatever the hell that they want to do. If you don’t like the service that they provide anymore, then you have every right to leave and go to another site, but it’s pretty ridiculous to say that Xanga has betrayed you simply because they added new features that you don’t like. In Star Wars, a lot of fans hated The Phantom Menace for falling short of their expectations, and they ridiculed George Lucas for ruining his own franchise. But even if you’re a hardcore Star Wars fan who’s purchased every action figure ever made my Kenner, George Lucas still doesn’t owe you jack shit. If you hated The Phantom Menace, then that’s your problem, not his, and that doesn’t give you any right to slander his name. It’s his story and he could tell it however he wants to. It’s the same thing with Xanga. You might think the TRUE campaign is lame or the stars system is pretentious, and those are perfectly valid sentiments to have. But don’t get pissed off because you think you deserve something better. You don’t deserve anything. Xanga might listen to your complaints, but just keep in mind that they don’t have to. Even if you’ve been blogging on Xanga for 100 years, Xanga still doesn’t owe you anything for allowing you to blog on their site for free. It might be nice to think that you are owed something because you’ve been a loyal user for years and years, but the only reason you feel that way is because it makes your life feel relevant.
I'm not saying that I like or hate Xanga, but do you feel Xanga has dissed you? If so, then you’re no different from that broad at Tower Records who hates Liz Phair. She’s just mad because Liz doesn’t make the kind of music that she used to like when she was drunk in college. Do you feel Xanga has done you wrong? If so, then you’re no different from the dork dressed up as Obi-Wan Kenobi at the back of the theater watching Attack of the Clones and grumbling, “Worst. Prequel. Ever.” He’s just mad because he realized Star Wars was really meant for children and now he’s a 34-year old virgin with a lot of toys. If you’re any of these people, you’re just mad because the world has changed from a time when you were happy and you haven’t changed along with it. There is nothing right or wrong about Xanga’s new features, so stop acting like someone has challenged your morality. No one is ever entitled to anything. If you feel entitled to things then you will always be unhappy because you will never be satisfied. The world will be a much better place if you don’t set yourself up to be let down. And if reading this is pissing you off, then you’re getting exactly what you deserve.

I think people feel "betrayed" in the sense that Xanga was different from the other blog sites because it wasn't really a popularity contest (at least not to me). You came here, met some people, shared your life, commented, and kept going. It wasn't about how long you've been a member, or how many people you knew, how often you blogged or commented... it was about being part of a community, nothing more.
I personally haven't minded most of the additions. I've lived with Featured Content and star ratings, knowing that you had to be known to be acknowledged, because honestly some featured blogs always concerned me of how it got there, when I've seen plenty of good writing go unnoticed. However this TRUE campaign is the one that "hurts" the most because they don't tell you how to achieve it. It just seems completely part of a popularity contest of some sort. Knowing the right people. Commenting a lot? Blogging a lot? That's the stress that I don't want, even though I've been a Xanga user for 4 years (2 of them were as another account that I had closed so I can't even prove it).
I blog when I can, when I have something worth talking about. I'm not going to blog that I washed my hair, went to work, fed my cat, and watched movies because no one cares other than me. So to say that I'm not "True" now because I'm just not participating enough for them? They can kindly go... welll you know. It's insulting to me that I have to meet some sort of quota and I can't just be myself. I continue to be myself, but it's a bit betraying that myself isn't good enough.
Should I care whether I'm labeled or not? No, I shouldn't. But when I'm one of a dozen commenters that has no little tag, I feel left out of something. And I didn't join something to feel left out.
I only just noticed the TRUE thing. What's the point, really? Being untrue is ok with me.
are you serious?
read the EULA xanga's survey and the survey companyI could care less what xanga does and doesn't dobut the morality and ethics behind any company should always be in check, or it will fail, you either plan to study business in college, already are studying business, or studied business, correct? The core Xanga rocks, I think they are just fishing for the next big fad. I wish for more Star Wars. Looking forward to hearing about your May concert. ryc "huh": I erased that blog, it felt uncomfortable.
nice blog.
Gosh, I thought that topic had finally died out
but of course -- it never will.
I know why I like Xanga, the inteface & the people. I know why I have a blog on Xanga.
I think the key is, to respect that everyone has their own reasons for being on Xanga. And to welcome diversity.
and I don't get the glory of the old system, I've been told it was the SAME 50 sites day out day in. That sounds so lame, and cemented. Yeah, I can see that Star Wars nerd and that broad now...
Most of the meta-blogging about xanga that I've read is nothing like what you describe here. Many bloggers, including myself, who have been blogging here for years love xanga for the community of people writing here, and have seen new features come and go. Nobody's demanding anything of xanga, except that we want this site to be the best that it can be.
And as for xanga owing us nothing because we can blog here for free, well, that's a two-way street. Xanga wouldn't exist without the bloggers here, and thus, we do have a say in what happens here. If they piss off their loyal base, people will leave and not return, and xanga will slip from popularity. As someone who enjoys this site and is proud of what I've published here, I feel a responsibility to give xanga feedback and criticism when warranted. I feel my thoughts on what could make this site better can only help the folks at xanga, and the folks who blog here.
I certainly wouldn't go as far to say that I feel betrayed. This is a website, not my best friend. But, I do feel committed to this place, and when I see changes here that I feel are detrimental to the blogging community, I feel I have every right in the world to speak up. And, I think the folks at xanga appreciate the feedback. I'm not against change, just change for it's own sake. Some of the changes the xanga team have made are working, and some of them aren't. It's great that they're trying new things to make this place better; it's even better when they take a look at what they've done and tweak it.
Of course Avril Lavigne and Liz Phair can make whatever crappy music they want to. Liz Phair's new stuff makes me a bit sad, because her first few albums were so damn good. But, if she wants to make pop b.s. because she's a mom now and doesn't have the fire in her to make good stuff anymore, that's her own business. I'll stick to listening to music with talent.
Really? Avril? Her "spoiled brat" persona irritates me, but maybe that's the image her record label was shooting for.
Still, I'd be lying if I said I didn't listen to any of her stuff. "I'm With You" is probably the only song of hers I like.
And it seems I have stumbled onto a war of words on this comment page. Let's play nice! :)
haha :) true indeed, avril is getting *younger* in that sense. But it truly is annoying when they decide to explore other genres in which they fail so bad, hence loosing loyal fans.. all in all = ruining for themselves. But hey if im gonna embrace your view, then id say fuck it and that's her problem, what do i care ey? Well too bad the world is a bit more complicated than that and no matter how much we try we cannot stop ourselves from havin expectations. I for one would love to get rid of mine but they still remain in the back of my mind.
awesome post tho! xo
@mama_jess - Spot on about wanting the site to be the best it can be. Bravo!!
According to dictionary.com Xanga would come under the dictionary
definition as a service provider, and I would come under the definition
as a consumer.
Xanga offer a product, I take them up on their deal.
I don't know much about economics, business, or marketing it is not my
area of specialty. But I am a mum, and as a mum I need to shop a lot to provide for my large family.
There are a couple of things I have learnt about good companies from my
shopping experiences.
a A good company LIKES feedback from their consumers because it makes them more user friendly.
b. A good company does market research to 'TEST' their product with
consumers to make sure their consumers would be happy with the service
they provide.
c. When a company doesn't listen to it's consumers then it leaves them up the proverbial creek without a paddle.
d.
A good company DOES try to build 'relationships' with their consumers,
and some of these succeed in winning their consumers in life long
relationships. A child grows up on a particular brand and if it is
still around buys that brand for their children etc.
As it stands, I am of the mentality that if I use a service and if that
service is good then I am HAPPY to pay for it, use it, tell others
about it and essentially become an independent 'advertiser' for that
product.
As a consumer I have some issues with Xanga.
I don't like opening a window and seeing some one's tits in my face,
especially if my kids are sitting next to me. Last week I clicked on
'most viewed photos' off the main photo page of Xanga, and saw some guy
jacking off.
Now others are ok with this and that is their prerogative. But as a
consumer I am not going to pay for that. Do I feel betrayed by Xanga?
No, I choose to be here, I choose to be a part of the community and I
choose to use tact about when and how I use it now.
I love the community, Xanga is by far the best blogging site in that
regards (as far as I am concerned) and to be honest it wouldn't take
too
many tweaks to get me to pay the $100 fee to be a member. They really
have something here, which is why I stick around. But there is not a
chance in hell of me doing that while as a service provider I believe
they are letting their consumer's (ME) down by not making those tweaks
and listening to what their 'consumers' are saying, which in return
let's themselves down, because they loose fee paying members.
As for Avril?
Who gives a flying fig?
If I don't like it- I don't buy it.
That is not betrayal that is good economics and business.
I'm pissed. HA HA, Just kidding, people need focus their energy on real things to be pissed about, like starving kids or something
Avril Lavigne is huge in Japan and Xanga never disses me, I diss Xanga. Kidding, I could never do that. It's my third home.
i'm glad i don't feel that way about xanga lol.
i've learnt more about avril from your site. her song "i'm with you" brings me back to a particular moment in time from the past, and that's what i usually think of avril when i hear about her--you did a post on this before, if i recall correctly. i don't pay much attention to her current songs, though. i think my favourite album is her first one, so many memories!
"The world will be a much better
place if you don’t set yourself up to be let down."
May I quote this from you? Cause it is so true and I'm glad you point it out. Thanks.
bravo! great blog, i completely agree w/everything you posted.
awh
i dunnow hat im doing i have to comment twen times though xD
amen! i can't stand people who think the world owes them something...you took exactly what i was thinking and put it into something more coherent, with a lot less swearing. if i could give you more than 2 eprops, i would...but i just haven't figured out how yet...
avril...she's quite a cool girl anyway...
avril is cool i like her to
" I love Avril Lavigne, but she’s kind of a dumbass." haha you sir are hilarious! you never fail to brighten up my day.
and i definitely hate it too when people complain about the new xanga. buncha haters!
@im_unik - I concur with both your statements times infinity, minus one because I don't use the word "haters."
But people are indeed haters. It's really pitiful.
Nice post manilajones. Xanga for the goddamn win.
personaly, I like xanga for my reason ans I know that others don't like the site for their reasons.
*shurgs* I'm here, I'm staying and I'm happy.
that's really all i can think of to say on this topic. :)
I think that Avril Lavigne has been waiting a long time to come out to her fans as a blond-wannabe-cheerleader instead of a punky-kind of girl, haha (:
