Cyndi tried to incorporate diversity into her videos even in the 80s
JC
The Sydney Morning Herald interviews Cyndi Lauper as she gears up for her tour in Australia next month. She comments on her efforts to include diversity in her videos. Raised in multicultural neighbourhoods in Queens and Brooklyn, Lauper dropped out of high school in her teens to sing. Her first band, Blue Angel, bombed, and Lauper released her debut solo album in 1983. The first single from the album, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, became a worldwide hit.
"I fought hard to put multiracial people in the [music video] so that every little girl watching might see it and go, 'Yeah, me too!'" she says.
