  • Absolutely Fabulous thinks mixed babies are...kinda like a nice handbag...or a sparkly bracelet!

A review of BBC’s sitcom, Absolutely Fabulous, mentions the most recent episode. A scary example of exotification and objectification if you ask me! Mixed-race babies as accessories???

Twelve years on, Ab Fab is sharper, darker and funnier than ever. Tonight Edina (Jennifer Saunders) hosts a book club (required reading: OK magazine) and discovers the father of Saffy's baby is black. In a flash her revulsion at the thought of being a grandmother turns to joy. "A mixed-race baby is the finest accessory anyone in my position could ever have. It's the Chanel of babies!"

  • Oh no! I don't know which of today's entries (Half-Breed Prince or Fashion Accessories) wins top honors for being eek! cringe-worthy!

...though, I think I give it to this one for the 'revulsion' turned to 'joy'. The baby in the pic looks sooo thrilled. Hope she isn't shoved to the back of the closet when the fall/winter fashion lines come out.:(

  • on an earlier episode, in season one or two, she attempts to adopt a romanian baby because she's bored when her assistant starts actually doing the work she's supposed to be doing. the reasoning was that romanian babies (because of the highly publicized orphanage situation over there) were the "it" babies of the moment. in the same episode she remarks that she regretted not getting a vietnamese one "when that was the thing" and entertained the idea of getting "one in every color, one in every room!" in another episode saffy accuses edina of using her as an accessory, since being a working mom is in vogue at the time, and it makes her look more "together" (though anyone who's seen the show can tell you her parenting skills are about as good as michael jackson's). basically, one persistent theme throughout the show is how edina is extremely careless in her dealings with all people since fashion and fabulousness trumps all, which is problematic in all instances, and would definitely seem more so when she's talking about children of color.

nevertheless, i love that show and am kind of an ab fab scholar of sorts :).

  • Treebi, thanks for giving us some of the background on this show! helpful to think about this with more context. :) ~ JC
