  • British film spins realistic tale of interracial romance

    JC

Channel 4 Film reviews Ae Fond Kiss… A film coming out of the UK and directed by Ken Loach, it is the last in his 3-part trilogy. The story focuses on the interracial romance of a Pakastani DJ and his sister’s Irish music teacher.

Though ….the film sound[s] like a riff on the archetypal Romeo and Juliet tragic love story, Ae Fond Kiss... is never so obvious. Loach uses the complexities of the relationship to examine broader themes of community identity, generational conflict and religious intransigence (both Muslim and Catholic) with regards to individual happiness. In the process he maintains a hopeful tone about the benefits of assimilation, difficult as it may be, but he's still too much of a realist to offer an unequivocally happy ending for everyone. However, the conclusion (aided in no small way by two impressive lead performances from Birthistle and first-timer Yaqub) feels like a realistic reflection of modern life in a multi-cultural society.
