National Updates

A couple of things to keep you updated on National stuff:

From Dawn Farmer, Tau Beta Sigma National Vice President for Communication and Recognition:

Greetings, all!

Tau Beta Sigma will have their next Student Chat on Tuesday, September 26th at 9pm EST. We are working out the final details of where we are hosting the web chat, and will publish those as soon as we are able to. In the meantime, pencil it in - 9/26!

In our September Student Chat, we will be discussing ideas for recruitment (since its that time of year!) and innovative ideas in membership education. I hope to see many of you there.

In the meantime, if you have suggestions for future monthly chat topics or general questions about the chat, feel free to contact me at dawn@tbsigma.org.

Have a great day!

ITB,

Dawn

From Kathy Godwin, Tau Beta Sigma National President:

Reminder!!!!

Chapter Personnel Reports are due September 30th unless your university is on the quarter system. If you do not have the form from the National Headquarters, call or email them (or me)

Also, as this will become one of those phrases that will haunt me and hopefully each of you in your sleep, remember that it is not just the chapter president's job to make sure this is done, it is EVERY actives responsibility.

If you have questions, let me know! That's why I'm here!

From Kathy Godwin, Tau Beta Sigma National President:

Sisters and Brothers of Tau Beta Sigma,

I hope all of you are enjoying the start of the year with classes starting and band camp wrapping up, in full swing, or just starting depending on your school. With this time of year as we all jump into service, I hope you have found the renewed sense of purpose in our organizations for service and sisterhood. This is a great time to also see those that will be the future leaders of our organization. Also during this time, you will be receiving materials regarding dues and updates on the status of the Sorority. It is every active’s responsibility to be aware of these areas and ensure they are covered. Don’t just assume that this is a president’s job alone.

With this information in mind, I would like to address a decision made recently affecting everyone. Over the past several years, Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma have had instances of hazing allegations along with additional concerns in the area of risk management. With each instance, those on the individual campuses were addressed and the leadership of our organization also worked to ensure that others realized the impact that these instances could have on our organization as a whole. Due to these instances, the insurance company has raised the rates for Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma to substantially. The amount that Tau Beta Sigma is responsible for is in the range of $6,000.00.

Over the first year of this biennium, Tau Beta Sigma has been staying on course with the budget. This change in the insurance was unexpected when the budget was presented to the Ways and Means committee and discussed the needs for the biennium. The Tau Beta Sigma National Council reviewed the routes we could take to ensure the fee was covered along with staying fiscally responsible and following the budget laid out. In addition, I brought the discussion to the district leaders in Stillwater, Oklahoma at DLC this summer. During the discussion, they were also presented with options of increasing each member’s dues by $2 or raising the chapter fee. The poll taken at the time showed the preference for the increase of $2 which was also the preference of the National Council. As there was agreement between the student leaders in attendance and the National Council, the National Council proceeded to vote on an increase of $2 to the dues.

When preparing the agenda for the next National Convention, this item will be included in the charges for discussion for the Ways and Means committee in Orlando in 2007 to determine the future of the fees. Should you or any member have any questions before then, please feel free to contact me or any members of the National Council.

In the bond,
Kathy Godwin
National President
Tau Beta Sigma
