  • It's not often that you walk out of a doctors appointment completely impressed. Under my new insurance, I decided to take the cheap eye insurance since I don't really have a preference of where I go. Well today started Open Enrollment and, being that I was in benefits,  decided I should probably re-enroll....then I realized I hadn't even used my eye insurance yet. So I did a quick search and found a Pearl Vision right down the street from work.

So let me give a little background. I never really went to the eye doctor until I was in high school. In fact I might have been a Junior or Senior. I have never had any anxiety with my regular doctor, gyn, or dentist...ever....even when there was pain involved. Over the past 10 years (holy crap....I can say that now. crazy), I have dreaded going to the eye doctor. The reason....they poof test. Not the actual poof though, the anticipation of the poof and the embarrassment rapid blinking. I have always been a little sensitive with my eyes so much that I had to force myself in college to get used to putting on makeup. It took me months to be able to comfortably apply eye liner because of the uncontrollable fluttering. Matt has even noticed this and picks on me every now and then.

So anyways, I go every year because I know the few minutes of anxiousness and anticipation are worth the benefits of my yearly eye exam. So I made an appointment same day (which I was thoroughly impressed was available) and went at lunch. I arrived at 11:25 an was in my car on the way home at noon. This included paperwork and the entire exam. Not bad. The doctor was amazingly nice. I told her about my issues with the poof machine and she said...now get this...."We are going to use that for the glaucoma test anyways"....I just about jumped out of the chair and hugged her.

I've heard of this way of doing it before but I never would have thought Pearl Vision was techno forward enough :) She put a few numbing drops in my eyes (yes there was fluttering and nervous laughter on my part but it only lasted a few seconds and wasn't nearly as bad as the poof test). She let that numb and then dropped some yellow dye in. Then a machine is used to view the eye and test the pressure. What she didn't tell me is that she was actually touching my eye with this machine. I was numb so I couldn't feel it. It pushes against the eye and measure the pressure that way.

So, quick appointment, crazy nice doctor, and no poof test. Success!! They have a long term customer in me for sure. I deferred on dilating my eyes since I needed to come back to work and, well, actually work....I'll just do it next year when someone can drive me home. I would have done it but she said I probably wouldn't be able to read the computer screen...since that is what I do all day...you know that might make it a long afternoon.

So that is my great experience today. Thank goodness for technological advances and great customer service!

May be a little corny but it really makes you think. How many times have you had a bad day and took it out on a stranger? Or been annoyed when an elderly person is walking too slow in front of you. I'm guilty of it also so I'm not judging. I think we need these reminders every now and then to keep us on the right path.

Hope everyone had a great weekend and hope you have a great week!

  • Well, it's been a week since my last post and things are better. Especially since I have 2 days off work :).

Up to Ashland yesterday for an induction ceremony. Today, running, walking up to the market downtown, then some shopping for much needed fall clothes and shoes. The most wonderful part is that it is only Friday. I still have 2 more days before I have to go back to work!!!

So, I'm heading out for a run!
