Twilight Stuff
With all this talk of Twilight of late, I had to laugh when I came across this item in the LA times yesterday about the Entertainment Weekly cover that ran a couple of weeks ago with the stars from the movie on it. It's about how the fans of the book absolutely hated the cover, blah blah blah, and in particular about the presence of chest hair on Edward. The article itself is tiny, but it's the comment section that's the true fun, with everyone putting their 2 cents in endless speculations about the cover and its importance.
Anyhoo, i have a subscription to EW so I do remember thinking the way they did up Edward was pretty ghastly when I saw it. It's mostly the hair and the powdery complexion. Uh, they do have digital retouching these days, couldn't they have done something to improve that shot? The girl looked fine, if not particularly Bella-like, but that picture of Edward was pretty bad. As for the chest hair, well I wasn't picturing him with any, but it doesn't say in the book that he was completely hairless or anything, so I don't know what the big deal is. Well, here's the pic, judge for yourselves:
It's not even that much chest hair, really. But he really should look a little more etheriel, or something.

Anime Party & Bike Ride
The anime party I hosted on saturday was great--the only bummer was that my friend Anita couldn't be there :) But most everyone else showed up and we played a lot of Rock Band and Guitar Hero, but we also watched a lot of cool anime! There was this hilarious one about a college kid who could see microbes (as cute little cartoon characters), a cool action/historical one about a female warrior in ancient China (directed by the guy who did Ghost in the Shell series, so a strong, competent female characters must come naturally to him), and a weird/funny one about this loser who turns out to be the heir to a mafia family and is helped by a little mafia baby (?!). Hey, in anime, the weirdest premise can actually work quite well. I seem to recall a series called Midori Days, in which a guy's hand turned into a girl(!). And Mary, who's all into sewing now, made me the cutest little tote bag! It's tan microsuede with orange accents--awesome. Anyhoo, a good time had by all.
Sunday was spent cleaning up and doing some shopping. I got a rack for my bike and some saddle bags, in preparation for my grand bike ride to work today. The hubby and I were thinking of trying to go see the Batman movie, but ultimately got too lazy. I spent the rest of the afternoon/evening preparing for this morning. I left the house around 7:10 and got to work at about 8:30, so I rode 14.4 miles in a little under 1.5 hours. Not setting any speed records, but it wasn't too bad! The worst part is negotiating the freeway on/off ramps, but there were only a couple of spots where I had to deal with those. Now I'm feeling a bit ambitious and thinking of riding my bike once a week--at least until the weather stays nice and it's still light. We'll see how that goes, but it's one less day at the gym. Well, and there's still the ride home, which will be hotter and more crowded.

Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife
By Mary Roach
see relatedVacation's Almost Over :(
It's been a great two weeks, but like all good things, it must come to an end. I was in western Canada for a week, and I had another week off just hanging around at home, visiting some friends, etc. The Canadian trip with the Curtii was really fun; we got along pretty well. We met up with a lot of their Warcraft friends in Calgary and Vancouver, and they all turned out to be lovely people. With all the Asians in Vancouver, I was surprised to find myself the only Asian in these Warcraft gatherings. I wonder what the racial breakdown is among players? I think they're mostly white people. Having been to Eastern Canada a few years ago, it was interesting to get the Western Canadian perspective. For one thing, most of them seem to have a great contempt for the Quebecois (people of French extraction in Quebec), and consider the province of Quebec a great drain on Canadian resources. I've always thought of Canada as one big happy family, but as is the case with most families, nothing is perfect.
Calgary is a much sleepier city than Vancouver, and had a big cowboy culture, surprisingly. They have an annual event called The Stampede, where they actually herd a bunch of cattle and horses through the center of town--apparently it's a huge bash and people really go nuts. We missed it by about a week, but maybe that was a good thing. The highlight of our time in Calgary was definitely visiting Banff National Park. It's a huge park, kind of a like our Yosemite, perhaps, and we only got to see a very small portion of it, but what we saw was pretty amazing. We loved going canoeing on Lake Louise, and visiting the imposing Fairmont Banff Springs hotel. Vancouver was much more cosmopolitan, and since the weather was so nice, it almost felt like I was back at home--like an alternate universe Santa Monica. We got to see a lot of Vancouver: we drove/walked through most of its famous neighborhoods, rode bikes around their huge Stanley Park, drove up to Whistler one day to do the ziptrek tour thingy, and took the ferry over to Vancouver Island and visited the Butchart Gardens. The only bummers were: not bringing my camera along to the ziptrek tour (didn't think it was allowed, but found out it was, grrr), not having enough time on Vancouver Island to see the town of Victoria, and leaving my Nintendo DS and ipod at the hotel! Luckily I remembered while I was at the airport and was able to call them and ask then to ship them out to me. Hopefully it won't take too long. Anyhoo, here is a flickr link with all 800+ photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/shwphotos/sets/72157605893923935/ Be sure to turn on the comments if viewing the slideshow. Now I'm just mentally preparing myself to getting back to work tomorrow--boohoo.
