| Interesting article...Everyone has read about loonies who believe the end is nigh doing crazy
things in preparation. But what about when you see people doing crazy
things in preparation for the end...but they don't appear to be loonie?

Of course all this is far-fetched. Right?

| Linux - day 3Well, yesterday was really the first time in my linux career where I took a bit of time to enjoy the fruit of my labor. With my codecs operational, I was finally able to watch a DVD. I downloaded EVE, which literally installed itself. I don't even know where it installed. I'm such a noob.
I also resolved the flash plug-in problem by downloading the pack directly from adobe. Very simple install there, as well.
Lastly, I gave KDE another shot. Unfortunately, I'm having all sorts of problems with it. It's not mapping my drives. Emmy says its because its not finding my root directry, and that seems a reasonable hypothesis.
We'll have to see.. maybe it won't be an issue if I decide to stick with GNOME... a decision which will largely be a function of how well i can make it look like something other than a Mac. Little things, you know.. I hate looking at the top of the screen for the time. I like my menus at the bottom of the screen. And I like "explorer" type windows. Okay, gotta work now.

| Linux - day 2So my missions for the day were basically accomplished:
1) mp3, mp4, DVD, and (untested) DIVX codecs have been installed. 2) temporarily resolved windows border and terminal malfunction issue
Not accomplished: 1) still no macromedia flash 2) auxillery mouse buttons still don't work.
Extra goals accomplished: 1) Installed and configured thunderbird 2) got a freakin awesome screen saver with 3d rotating tetrahydracannibinol molecules 3) installed KDE desktop, though having some problems with it.
Next on the agenda:
1) get flash working 2) figure out how to manually install programs. 3) play with KDE a bit more
Okay.. back to work

| Linux - day 1With a little help from my lovely girlfriend, I finally managed to install Ubuntu Linux on the 'Tron. My initial reaction was that it looks like OSX and is nerf linux, but it take too long for me to realize those were good things.
In response to her blog, I tried this control-alt f2 shortcut which promptly shutdown the GUI interface and put me at a command prompt. I was screwed then, of course, but the know command i know is 'ls', or the DOS equivilent of 'dir'.
But before that, I managed to get internet up and running, mail, and a bit of custom desktop settings. My next projects will be, first, to figure out how to get back into the GUI from the command prompt (I'm stuck there currently), and then collect all my codecs. Out of the box, it has none whatsoever. It can't even play mp3! Anti-freeware nazis.

| Washington, DC - While studying at GW I wrote to this blog but rarely. My feeling was that this was because of the general reduction of interesting phenomena from my life. It's easy to find stuff worthy of sharing when you're living abroad. I was also not too happy with my situation at GW--mostly because of the superficiality of the education they gave me (a couple of classes excepted). Now that I am a "Master" of national security policy, I feel I'm scarcely better qualified to think on such matters than any rational, educated person with some interest in international affairs. So now that I'm graduated, should I recommence with this blog? When I started this venture I promised I wouldn't write just for the sake of writing: meaning, if I don't have anything interesting to say, don't say anything at all. Hmm.. Can't think of anything at the moment. | | |
