My Vow in Times of Tropical Storm Stress or Why I'd Like to Lick Jim Cantore's Bald Head.

 jimcantore

I will not run out and buy rutabagas, Spam, tuna or Strawberry PopTarts.

I will not rush to the window to peer out every single time I hear the wind pick up.

Nor shall I spend hours tying down all outdoor items with rope, that will take me until next hurricane season to get undone again.

When I go to the store, I will not buy flashlights, candles, water by the truckload or enough ice to flood my house when it melts.

I will, from here on out, refrain from referring to the weather guy by his first name, even though I feel like I know him.

"But, Jim says we should buy enough food to feed Maryland for a year."

"Jim insists someone cut back those iffy looking trees least they crash into our house."

Or the random high hysteria "JIM SAYS SEEK SHELTER!!"

When my mom continuously calls to ask me what kind of damage a hurricane can do

or

When Bill, one hour before the worst of it is about to hit, starts insanely bringing inside all the chairs I did not tie down in between venturing back and forth to the store for Spam, tuna, rutabagas and chocolate donuts, I WILL NOT PANIC!!!

When the birds in our yard begin twittering insistently and acting crazy in their suspicious bird way, I will resist the urge to join them or engage in any bird watching activities, in order to head off impending doom.

"See, all those hours of forcing you to watch Animal Planet paid off!  The birds know when bad weather is coming.  Do you think Jim knows to watch the birds?"

In the meantime, I will remain calm, repeating "things will be fine" over and over again to myself and them.

And then I'll go back to watching the weather channel.

The closest I can relate is to standing under a doorway when an earthquake hits...they say your pets will sense when one's coming.

We lived in Florida for years.  I went thru Hurricane Andrew and many other storms and nothing can compare to watching your home and yard go flying like so much paper!

Hugs!

It's gonna be OK! Katrina was the first time I ever lost electricity during a hurricane in 13 years of living in Jackson. Usually, the main problem for us is traffic from evacuees. Of course, everyone is going to go crazy buying gas when a storm gets closer this time. But it's gonna be OK, just keep telling yourself that.

I will resist the urge to join them--Can I join them?  A week of vacation with the children, and then a week of being home, just with them, while Smiddy is mostly away is enough to make me want to take flight.

Just a bad thunderstorm is usually the worst we get around here, thank goodness!

Nothing wrong with being prepared.  "Katy" says that storm has potential to be a baddie.

You must hate me.  I hope for the hurricane to come this way so we can get some rain out of it for my crops (farmer's way of thinking.  LOL!).

We are needing rain as well, but I can understand the "not so hidden" panic that you might feel.  Storms just need to stay in the Atlantic.  Texas certainly didn't need rain.

Hahaha, I loved this entry and boy, do I identify with you!  Those dang birds, DO have a sixth sense about the weather!

But most importantly, I honestly adore rutabagas.  They are so unutterably fine, on a cool Autumn day...

That's probably the only thing good about living in South Jersey. No tropical storms and good produce. Have a great weekend.

I am generally calm about hurricanes but this time I flew back in a small propellor plane throught the outer bands of Dean.  It was terrible and we missed the airport and had to circle the island a couple of times to get in under the wind.  I'm never going to be that laid back again.

Really?!?! I love hurricanes. I think they get a bad rap. They're really only dangerous to those who don't listen, and decide to stay on the coast. Drive inland a few miles and just sit back and watch Mother Nature do her work. Sometimes you'll have to fix a leak here, or chop up a tree there, but it keeps things interesting.

Of course, I'm also the guy who sat by the riverside and watched tornadoes spawn...
