med school and beer

it's only my second day in school. but already i've had what i personally perceive to be highly enlightened observations about med school. and i find that there are, in actuality, stunning similarities between med school and beer, the alcoholic beverage named after a drunk grizzly. and naturally there are differences. in the following article, i shall attempt to explore both from the point of view of an observer and an insider.

Similarities

both are bitter. and after a while of consuming it, you enter into a bliss. only to wake up in utter dismay

too much of either of them gets you intoxicated. it remains disputed as to which one has a worse effect on your overall health.

if you have either of them daily, chances are, you'll die 10 years earlier.

under the influence of either of them, you are not able to: think well, work well, communicate well

too much of either of them gives you a serious hangover.

under the influence of either of them, you find yourself doing things you would never have done had you been absolutely, say, yourself and normal

when you get together with friends, all you talk about is ______ (fill it out yourself)

people find it excessively annoying if ______ is the centre of your conversation. every one of them. every. one.

some people think they can meet people of the opposite sex if they are involved with ______. true, but you won't be a very interesting person to them.

Difference

when you watch a game of ice hockey/football/basketball, a healthy bottle of beer and not med school will make the moment much more fun.

americans produce the best med schools. americans do not produce the best beers.

most people who drink beer regularly do like beer. most people who go to med school regularly do not like med school.

editor's note: all of the above information regarding beer is based almost entirely on observation. the information regarding med school, however, is sadly, based on personal experience.

thoughts before school

so...i'll be off to school in what...15 minutes. here i am, back again. and since this may well be the last few times i actually have time to randomly talk about things, i'll throw random thoughts out.

today i had an interesting discussion with a friend. she read the newspaper and saw that liukin had won the gold in women's gymnastics, who was representing the USA. then she said, 'look at her name. she isn't even american' and further added, 'oh, she was even born in russia.'

to which i replied, 'she isn't even american? ok. is steven poon (my cousin) american? is al pacino american? is shaquille o'neal american? is ernest tam (another cousin) american? what about barrack obama? and muhammad ali? and daniel westerdahl (a friend)? and matthew mccarty (a friend)? christina neundorff (friend)? as far as i know, these are all americans to the core.'

which sparked the interesting question of: what's an american. for me, i think liukin, al pacino, steven poon are all american. it is an immigrant's country. less than 1% of the population is made up of native americans. so unless only those are americans, then either 99% of the states are not american, or all of them are.

see...totally random

to be honest, i'm very pleased with the basketball the US are playing. and when kobe gets back into his game, all the other teams are toasted. so far, d. wade rules the court.

on the otherhand, a big plea on behalf of all my canadian friends and colleaques: Canada better start winning something.

the olympics. well unfortunately for me, though i love sports, i've really got my eyes set on one single event. olympic basketball. the dream team of the US of A.

my prediction: they'll lose one game to a european team, but still win the whole thing. it's cool if they lose at least a game coz some guys need to shut up and stop acting as if they're kings of the world, but it's not cool if they lost the whole thing coz some guys who are more mature and responsible and aren't as cocky as those who act as if they're somebody (e.g. kidd, james) deserves to win it.

even though they lost 2004, they're still the best. and they should get AI back on the team. just because. and TD as well.

take faith. and lean on Him for strength.

and to focus on what He has entrusted me to do.
