Eating Disorders: I've Found a way to Help!
I'm not sure how many of you have read my semi-recent pulse about anorexia and bulimia, but to sum it up for you, I was utterly frightened by some of the blogs I read about anorexic and/or bulimia. What those girls are going through is real and tragic, it really bothered me just by reading their blogs: the constant calorie counting (in which all of them were way below the healthy, daily amount of calories [2,000]) was one thing that definitely bothered me. Not only is it unhealthy, but I found that others who had commented on their blog were telling them to "Stay Strong!", which is a phrase that I read on almost of the blogs I came across. Encouraging the unhealthy lifestyle, which is terrifying, in itself.
I also found that many of those blogs included contests and point systems, those I just didn't understand, and I'm not sure that I wanted to. The one thing about them that I do know is that they promote an unhealthy lifestyle, I know that from common sense and I remember reading in a blogring that someone should not try the contest if he/she wasn't anorexic or bulimic. It's so scary that not only there are so many young women who are faced with problems with eating, but that there are so many people who not only agree with it, but promote it. If you ask me, those blogrings should be shut down, they are obviously not helping anyone.
To add to me being startled, in my pulse I was also searching for a way to help. It's taken me a couple of weeks, but I've finally found a way that I can help young women with eating disorders! I was checking out different sites on eating disorders and I came across this one: The National Eating Disorders Association. I wanted to learn more about what I could do to help, and I started reading about National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. My local hospital doesn't celebrate it or do anything for it whatsoever, and I find that striking. It could help young women so much, and even young men who suffer with eating disorders, not to mention it would help the hospital, as well.
So my plan is to successfully plan and organize one whole week of events at the hospital, during National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. This way, it gives young women and men the opportunity to come to the hospital, get educated about eating disorders, find success ways to prevent them, for those who do have eating disorders or ones who at severe risk can get the group and one-on-one help they want and need, etc.
I want to give these kids the opportunity to help themselves or help a friend or family member. Where they can come to the hospital and join the events, just by walking through the door. No cash needed, just themselves, that's it. These kids deserve better, they deserve the help that they so desperately need that maybe, they wouldn't get otherwise.
I would put it in the paper, I would advertise it, even send the information into some magazines, get some real awareness raised. This event could be huge and that's what I want it to be, not for me, not for the hospital, but for the young men and women who deserve the open opportunity to get some help, or just listen to what we have to say. I want to get some top psychologists, maybe even a women's leader, etc. I want to get the best help possible for these kids - they deserve it, they just don't realize it right now. I want them to feel self-worth, realize they are worth saving and they are smart, beautiful people and they truly deserve only the best.
Now, first, I must get this planned out completely before getting a meeting with the big shots and the hospital. This is going to be a mighty task, and I'll be honest with you - I'm not sure I have a great enough power in order to get them to do this, but I believe if they would just give me a chance and let me show them what great progress this could be, they might just go through with it. I hope they do, for those kids who really need it - they are what counts, they are what matters.
So dear friends, if you have any comments, suggestions, etc. Please post it below, I would love to hear what you have to say!

I was also seriously disturbed by some of the things I have read and seen on Xanga, particularly the contest to not eat. I honestly think they best way to help fight this is for the media to stop portraying men and women who are so thin it is unhealthy as "beautiful". Most of the celebrities you see out there are below the correct BMI index for their height/weight range. That's pretty scary.
I think it would be good if your hospital could somehow partner with local high schools. I've seen these horrible sites too, and it looks like a majority of them are ran by girls who are 14-18. If the hospital could go talk to high schools about the dangers you'd reach out to those who may be afraid to come on their own.
Before you get too big with this idea, make sure you have a focus. I plan events for my job sometimes, and it's easy for things to get so big they either get out of hand or too expensive. I love StephanieMarie7891's idea to target high school students - you already have a setting (school) that can be accessible.
Good luck to you, this is a wonderful idea!
thank thy Lord!Someone with senses around here!I'm glad I'm not the only one who realizes anorexia&bulimia are not some glamorous lifestyles, but a disease. You're so right,it's creepy how these girls are encouraging it.I hope your project comes to fruition as soon as possible!
"My best friends are Ani & Mia." It's frightening isn't it? Good luck with your events, I'd love to hear how it's going!
For real, it's very scary to think about. I've always been very thin and people have jokingly called me anorexic. I find it very offensive and also very frightening that it could be thought of so lightly, and even to joke about it... Well written blog :)
