Easy Ways to take the Green Route
Below are easy ways of going green...
- Take your car to the car wash instead of DIY
- Forget the plastic water bottles, buy a stainless steel bottle when you're on-the-go
- Love your morning cup o' joe as much as I do? Buy organic coffee!
- Turn off your coffee pot or espresso machine as soon as your coffee is brewed [Easy energy saver!]
- Use refillable mugs/coffee cups, made of ceramic or glass, instead of plastic
- Rather than filling your gas tank full, cut back $5-$10 a week
- Turn off the shower while shaving or brushing your teeth [save water AND money!]
- Don't take clothes hangers home after buying clothes, leave them at the store for reuse
- For clothes hangers at home, the ones that you do not want or use, donate them to thrift stores
- Next time you paint your fabulous nails, try using green polishes such as Priti or Suncoat
- Remove your name from direct mailing lists to get rid of junk mail by registering at the Mailing Preference Service on the Direct Marketing Associations website, for just $1
- Keep your refrigerator full, but not overstuffed, to get your refrigerator running at max capasity
- Cut down on paper and energy use by paying your bills online [It's also faster and saves money!]
- Avoid the drive-thru, strut your stuff into places to cut down on fuel and carbon emissions
- Turning your heat down and putting a sweater, or warmer clothing, will save energy and your money

Removing your name from Junk mail lists is a good thing, which I already have done. Making and transporting all that paper is stupid. Paying bills online (which I do also) is a great suggestion also.
I can't agree with not filling your tank though. In the face of rising gas prices it makes sense to buy as much as you can, because the next time you buy it's likely to be more expensive than right now.
Anyway keep it up! I'm definitely not down with the Saudis getting more of our money from oil profits. Reducing energy usage should be on everyone's agenda from a National Security, environmental and economic perspective.
Great list.
I agree with the comment above on the gas though. It's better to cut down your drive instead of your gas. Buying less gas doesn't mean you'll be driving less, it just means you'll have to buy gas more often!
Yep. The overall idea we have to propagate is this: Everything that you see around you takes energy to produce, transport, bring to market, operate and to dispose of. If you start thinking about it in those terms logical choices are much easier.
Things like foam cups take up an utterly unbelievable volume in landfills but the impact is quadruple-whammy: Foam is made from petroleum distillates (oil), made in foreign countries and transported here (ship/truck diesel) and when you throw them away they don't biodegrade, and create noxious fumes when burned. While It's doubtful you can eliminate all use of them, not using them when you don't have to goes a long way towards helping the issue.
Another note about recycling, aluminum recycling saves 95% of the energy to refine the metal from ores. In addition because of it's increasing use in cars it is more valuble than ever! Recycle those cans!
RYC: Of course they are. I'm in the minority that sees global warming as a cycle, which it is, and that climate changes've happened uncountable times over Earth's history. Going green is noble, but will it actually matter? Not unless EVERYONE does it.
@eclipse_the_dawn - I do think it matters, though I understand that it's not going to just dramatically change it two minutes. I think anything, even the smallest things are still helpful.
Thanks for the comment, yes people have been quite helpful.. For a background story on that particular post, read my last 7 or so posts, outlining the homeless story, and what happened so far here in Charlotte.

@sine_cera - You're welcome! Unfortunately, currently, I'm not such a green person just yet. I'm in the process of becoming more green and helping others see how easy it can be. =)
So just out of curisity, who is that a picture of?
Cloth grocery bags! We do that one.
They're also easier for my step mom to carry, which is a plus.
