  • Why are they Featured?

First off, I mean no offense to the people I will be talking about. I enjoy their posts and think they're great bloggers, I just also have something to say about that...

Why are people who are already popular getting featured? I understand that they are great bloggers, ones that almost all of us read daily, but that's exactly why they shouldn't be featured. These people are already popular, get plenty of comments and views, so they really don't need any more attention.

I think Xanga should feature less popular bloggers who write great posts and don't get enough views, not ones that are already popular and get lots of views. Though as I mentioned above, I mean no offense to the people in particular because I love their blogs and they are wonderful, and in some sorted way, I'd like to believe they would at least semi-agree with me.

How about you, what do you think about people getting featured who already are popular bloggers, and get thousands or more views?

xanga doesnt feature people so they can get popular. They feature blogs because they are worth the read. The reason there are "popular" sites on xanga is because so many people enjoy the blog

@CrazyXBeautifulXDisaster - Agree with you, you're right. I don't believe Xanga features people to get them popular, I know that it shouldn't and really isn't about that. It's just the fact that the people who are popular on Xanga will get their posts read anyway, and others won't get the chance for their good posts to be featured.

What do you define as a "popular" blogger?  I see different people in the featured section every day.  I see old blogs that are several years old that are still on the list because of the amount of views they have received on their article.  The photography section is much worse than the blog section, although it has been improving a bit as of late!

I believe the front page is hand picked by Xanga staff.  However, the rest of the pages are thrown up there by comments, recommendations, and stars.  The best way to get new people up there is to comment, star, and recommend the post you really think deserve to be up there.  Eventually, those people will get enough views, comments, etc., that they might make featured.

Oh, I adore this new theme by the way.  It's precious!

@Southernlass - Thanks! I really needed a new theme, and I think I finally found one I like and my readers like. =)

I would define popular such as TheologiansCafe. I don't want anyone to think I'm hating on those blogs cause I read them all the time, I think they're great. I guess, I just want people who don't get viewed much to have their chance.

I do agree with you in a way. I don't pay much attention to the featured blogs, so it really doesnt matter to me

I agree. I've stumbled upon a lot of great blogs that deserve to be featured. And I've recommended and starred when necessary. It seems that featuring a post from a blogger that already generates hundreds of comments per post kind of defeats the purpose of featuring any posts at all. The fact that there are already that many people reading would suggest little need for the post to be highlighted again. I don't know exactly how to word what I'm trying to say. But I know I agree with you.

I for one liked Amandasbiggestfan's idea about a month ago. I went to look for it so i could link it, but I gave up. It was to have the featured posts similar to what it has now, and another section for posts that would stay up for one day that are picked some other, more fair way. I don't remember all the details, but it would solve the problem you are talking about.
Plus, some of the "more popular" people i know don't get featured very much. A lot of the people in the featured section I've never heard of. But maybe I just hang in a different corner of the Xanga community.

I was actually featured the other day which Shocked the Heck out of me. Honestly, I've never been featured before in my entire time here on Xanga. I really never thought I would either, what with my non-mainstream content. So people who are not popular are getting featured too. I guess people who are already popular get featured because they already have the readership to get them featured? I really don't understand how the featuring works.

The only complaint I have though is that they don't notify you that you've been featured. I would have liked to know, but I found out from someone else after the fact because they mentioned it on their blog that I had been featured... which was really nice, but I was still flabbergasted. Maybe I have been featured before, but never knew it? How can you even tell without checking every day? Which I don't BTW. To be honest, I'm not sure why a lot of the posts get featured... it seems a lot of drivel when I have checked it out. Does that make me a bad Xangan? lol

To a degree, some recent featured blogs were questioned in a way by a few bloggers whom I read as well. Most of them are just itemizing stuff. They're fun to read, yes. And I agree that there are popular bloggers who get featured too, as you said. In terms of categorizing them, I guess you mean it's evident they're popular coz you see a lot of people read them thru the # of comments they have on their blogs (unless of course we can see their "footprints" page hehe). Getting featured means their blogs are worthy to be read and shared with others, I guess. In case we want to help out less-popular bloggers who're worth a read, maybe the FeaturedWeblogs team haven't seen them yet. Hence the need to Recommend Posts and recommend thru the team's chatboard (^_^).
