Saucer on an old table

Saucer on an Old TableI got in a photography mood this afternoon for some reason.
All the work for my August show is pretty much complete - including final finishing and hangers on the back. It's nice to see a body of work put together like that. I don't think I've ever worked so long and so hard on a show... at least not with this kind of a focus. It's been an excellent experience. I'm really looking forward to the show! A lot of people have said they're actually going to come see which really is unusual for me. I usually just count on the regular gallery crowd. I've not really had friends who would be that interested... or maybe I just never told them about the shows... either way...
I managed to run for 27 minutes yesterday. Got up to about 7 mph for a short period of time. That's a major accomplishment for me! I never thought I would be able to even jog 3 miles!
Tomorrow morning, I'll have a special smoothie. My peach tree is more productive than it has been any other year I've lived here so this afternoon, I picked about 5 peaches and peeled and sectioned them. They're small peaches, but very tasty. Tomorrow morning, I'll put all those peaches in my morning smoothie and it will be tasty and delicious. This weekend, I believe I'll be spending considerable time peeling peaches. Anyone know if they need to be treated specially in any way before going in the freezer? I thought I'd just peel and section them, put them in baggies and throw em in the freezer for later smoothie use. Anyone have any experience in that area?

Exploding Day

First, for you, a painting
Time is a Crooked Road
Acrylic on wood
About 12x15"
I started and finished this piece yesterday much to my surprise. It's different from my usual work, but I suppose time does that to a person. I know it's a funny kind of mood, but that's where I was... I may paint over it later or I may put it in my next show... who knows. What do you think about it?

Next, for you, embroidery
You remember the tree, I'm sure
Well now it's framed and happy under glass - prepared for the show August first.

And again
More embroidery
The koi lives under glass as well now.
I love the pressure of preparing for a show.
Makes me feel alive
Larger views of these pieces can be seen on my Deviant Art site if you're interested in that sort of thing.
Today is my personal New Years Day. A day of reflection and contemplation. I'm 27 today. I'm not really doing anything special. Probably won't answer the phone today. Sometimes I get so many Happy Birthday calls that I can't do anything but talk on the phone on my day and I don't really enjoy that. I'll paint and I'll work in the woodshop and probably prepare for class some. There will be kahlua in my coffee all day hehehe... That's about as special as it's gonna get for me.
Which is the way I like it.

Early morning bloggage
Random thoughts...
It occurred to me last night that some people really believe in unique love... That there might be a "One" person out there for "you" and if you miss it, you might not get another chance. I never thought about it till I was talking to a friend about a girl he's seeing... He made it sound like it's so important to see if there's "something there".
I've recently discovered that I'm just a real asshole I guess. I have no interest in any of that and I assume that things are exactly as they should be - whether I'm single or not.... whether I feel lonely or happy or whatever. I think that what we feel about our circumstances is largely a decision rather than something that happens "to" us. The events themselves are like storms passing over your house at night. It's your choice whether to hide under the covers and cry or to keep partying.
It appears that work - art and teaching - is just more important to me than most other things. My phone keeps ringing and I keep ignoring it. I guess I just don't have much to say these days. I'm not depressed. On the contrary, I'm really enjoying my life. I just spend most of my time alone now - working. Some days I'm working on the frames for my August show (which I'm rediculously excited about). Some days, I'm grading papers. Some days I just sew and care for the animals. People keep trying to tell me to "rest", but how much more restful could life be? Sitting around sewing for an art show is just about as peaceful and easy as it gets right? I find that life gets less happy when one's hands aren't busy. I'm certainly not straining myself. I'm just not making the choice to make time for things other people consider recreation. We don't really have to agree do we?
I discovered the other day that one can cut luaun with a box cutter. This is the most exciting discovery I've made in a LONG time!!! For those who don't know, luaun is a kind of cheap plywood. It has a fairly nice surface on it and is good for the backs of frames and also good to paint on. I like painting on wood better than I like painting on fabric. I like the texture and properties of the surface. It's also easier to frame for various reasons related to the particular tools I happen to own lol. It's also very inexpensive at about 50 cents per square foot!!! Cheaper than stretched canvas and more durable to boot!
Several pieces of embroidery are happily housed behind glass now. I've decided to forego the glass cutting tools for now since frames are dirt cheap at the Wally World anyway. Why deal with all the hassle and glass splinters when you can get a piece of 8x10 glass + a frame for less than 5 bucks? The frame is cheap, but I'll put a canvas board in that and paint all over the thing anyway so it's a great deal for me.
Destroy and rebuild.

Embroidered koi

This is close to the actual size of the piece... maybe a little larger than life.
One more piece done for the August show. It's in the wood shop now. The frame is half finished. Tomorrow I have to go purchase more framing supplies. Most of the piece is sewn in monofiliment. For those of you who are not sewing geeks, that means that I used only one strand of thread instead of the two or three strands most people use when embroidering or cross stitching.
Why would I do such a thing?
Because I want more opportunities to stab myself with the needle of course...
well that... and it makes the detail seksier.
This piece took about two weeks... I would guess around 40 hours of sewing.
Tomorrow, I'll probably have some pictures of completed frames. The goal is to get the rest of the embroidery framed and perfect by Tuesday.

Hey look - New embroidery

This is close to actual size. This rose is one more piece for my big August show. Looks like this weekend is going to be a massive framing adventure! I have about five pieces of embroidery that need to be put behind glass for the show.
Woke up with a weird headache today... I think I'm still recovering from my vacation. I got up at 5 AM yesterday to make a powerpoint presentation for my class and it kind of messed me up all day... I just don't do well with waking up early lol...
On the positive side, though, I wrote a song before work in addition to the presentation. I stayed up till after midnight last night trying to put some music to it. Funny thing is that the melody just doesn't seem to want to agree with any chords that I put to it... so I'm going to have to compose something that's not based on ready made chords... something more ornamental. It's good for me to stretch my brain on that again. I haven't done that sort of music writing in a long time.
I'm really glad that after this afternoon's class, I have a few days off. I'm SO beat right now lol...
