  • My weekend

I didn't get any pictures this weekend, but I had a mountain of fun!  On Saturday, some friends and I went to buy records at the antique shops in Clinton.  I got some Ray Charles and my friend got some Stevie Wonder. I really love listening to music on the turntable! It just has a more intimate feel... a more organic feel than newer recordings.  Sure you have to get up and flip the record every 20-25 minutes, but I don't mind lol.
Yesterday, I went and tried out a church.  It was very nice and I didn't feel judged from the start which is pretty rare in my experience. I'll keep going until/unless they start telling me how wrong I am. I believe religion should bring people together - not judge them apart. Hopefully this one will work for a while. I would like to be a part of a community of faith rather than just praying alone in my garden and stuff like that.
I got my Stimulus money last week! YAY!!! New sneakers for MEEEEE!!!

Old records?  My sentiments exactly.  When you play a record you have to really commit to it.  No shuffle.  It's get up, take it out, pick a side, put it on the platter, drop the needle, sit down, get up, pick another one, repeat process. Makes music a more tactile experience.  I have tons of old Rays.  Great Atlantic stuff from the fifties.  This stuff is still pretty easy to get these days.  The old Atlantic LPs were thicker and had a nice warm sound to 'em.  Screw digital!  :)

  • oceanstarr

@Ed_Kaz - I have an old THICK copy of Meet the Beatles. That's one of my most prized possessions!  Yeah... warm... that's the word for the sound!  A lot of people my age are seriously lacking in music education too so it's even more fun to expose them to the way things used to be!

  • theScalesandtheScorpion

very good.  I agree, religion should not be divisive.  Finding old music is awesome, isn't it?

  • bumblefish

have a great week-   sanga is terribly important hope that this one nurtures you - (Beatles -Blackbird remains my favorite of all times).

  • whiskeywench

Glad you had a fun weekend!

    Church scares me.

  • Ed_Kaz

@oceanstarr -   Uh oh.  You're getting me started!  I have tons of old Capitol Beatles and they are beautiful.  There's also a difference between the stereo and mono versions.   I recently came across a MONO version of Sgt. Pepper which has some mind-blowing differences from the stereo one we are used to hearing.   Keep educatin' those kids.

you are right about the record thing. you feel different when you listen to them. i understand the judging thing. i stopped going to the church that i was going to about a year ago. i was wrongfully terminated at that time and alot are looking at me differently. i feel like they are judging me. i didn't do anything wrong, he even said that when he let me go.

  • mrcolorful

I agree with you about religion.  Unfortunately too many people think that it is about legalism.

  • oceanstarr

@whiskeywench - Church scares me too. That's why I have to go and work through it. Not all churches are bad... and I refuse to carry around negative emotions about it for the rest of my life.

  • retroactivegirl

Vinyl = Love  I went garage-saling this weekend and we bought some fun stuff, old Tom Jones and Elton.

As for church, you know I'm happy to hear you're going to give it a try.  Which denomination are you going to?  I hope you find what you are looking for.

  • oceanstarr

@retroactivegirl - I'm going to the Unitarian church right now. I'll go just about anywhere if I can find non-judgmental fellowship. I don't really care what they believe as long as they don't pry into my belief system or make me believe theirs.

I was just thinking I have to invest in some new sneakers soon.  The ones I wore to help my friends move this weekend left my feet with little blisters - not painful, just annoying.  The shoes are four years old now.  I think it's aboot time
I was going to ask about what church it was, but I just saw in the comments.  There's a UU place up here I was thinking about trying; mebbe I will, mebbe I will.

  • MamaInkWench

Some day I may look at getting myself another turn table and then replacing the LP's that I use to have. I would like to find a church around here but I want something VERY small and hopefully like you (non-judgmental).

Otherwise I have the serenity of my front porch watching the squirrels and birds and the other gifts I've been given.

    Hugs'n'Smooches!

RYC:  I've been knitting since I was @ 5, which means basically since I can remember.  I tried to teach myself to crochet, but I have trouble with the tension.  Oh well.  I just like to work with yarns and threads - it's a texture thing, I guess.  When I go to a yarn store, I feel the yarn before I even look at the contents - I can tell 98% of the time if it's natural.  But, I'm used to my aunts stuff - she spins her own wool.

Records are fun, but it's a pain trying to find a needle!!!  What kind of church? YEAH for a welcoming one! When MIL gets back, I may have to take her to Catholic.  I'll have to stay cuz it's kind of rude (IMHO) to just drop her at the door.  Hope the ceiling doesn't fall in on me!

How nice the $$ came.  YAY!!!
ryc-assistance would have been greatly appreciated.  Taking another fun at it on Sunday.  roflmao

Do you believe religion, (your word) should change you? Because if remaining unchanged is the litmus test, you can stay home and accomplish the same thing. Saves on gas too.

Unitarians are the ones with the big question mark on the top of the steeple, right? You should be safe there in terms of belief system!

Sorry, it's just that someone had to say it.

  • GailThePainterly

I've been looking for a turntable. I was starting to think I was the only one that likes records. My kids think I'm a dinosaur. LIk you said, I'm still praying alone in my garden. People love to play judge. Hope you find what you're looking for. I'm going to try again too.

  • GruffTeddyBear

Way to stimulate the government (insert snicker and trick dick fun buck jokes here):-p

I totally agree with you about the mezmerizing experience of vinyl, it makes me all tingly-like. Stevie is the stuff times 10. =)
  • beautifulwolf

I still have my albums, I still have the turntable!! I ripped all the albums, and basically listen to them on my computer now though.. or my iPod or iPhone....

;)  but occasionally.... I listen to the vinyl

Absence makes the heart grow fonder, especially when it comes to music or religion. Both music and Religion has its baggage (reminding you of your past and reviving memories) and some of it isn't bad.

Some Buddhist and Shinto stuff is so repetitive that it is conducive to meditation, no wonder I could withstand some of that stuff. I think I need more patience and artist seem to be full of some of that stuff. Supposedly Temples and Churches are people hospitals and they are treating people's spiritual attitude.

I think I have been wearing the same tennis shoes over Three months. In my prime I used to wear them out in a month. I wonder how far you walk in your sneakers? They probably last you at least six months....

They now sell record players to convert the sound into MP3 format. I can really love stereo but with my boss we have installed 7.1 systems with woofers and surround sound. Thus a new level of stereo is spoiling me for better systems. Fortunately I haven't lost my high frequency pitch which older people tend to lose.

  • suzyQ_darnit

I really miss my record player.  It hasn't worked for years now, but I've held on to my records.  It hasn't been a high priority, since  I do have access to CD's and such, but still, as you said, there's just something about the record itself.  Someday!

@BoureeMusique - I really enjoyed the UU church. We'll see how it goes over time... I think you would have liked it. It was a very intelligent service!
@MamaInkWench - Being with the creatures here and sitting in the gardens really helps me a lot... Just gets lonely. That's why I went to try a church again.  Might as well go out and try one. If it doesn't work out, you can always try a different one.
@travelerblue - I did Unitarian this time because I've never tried them before and I've had several people recommend it to me.  My grandparents are disappointed lol... They'd almost rather I didn't go to church at all than to go UU.  In their mind, though, Catholic is even worse than UU. One time I went to Catholic mass and my grandfather found out - I think he almost had a heart attack!
@prairiecowboy - It's not possible to live without God changing you. That's how you know you're alive. Yeah I can stay home and pray and struggle with the changes of life by myself.  I'm going through an extremely intense time in my spiritual life right now, though, and I feel like I need the support of some friendly fellowship. I just don't have the strength right now to go to the kind of church where they do the whole 20 questions thing just digging for something they can criticize. A spiritual walk should be challenging, but the social environment in a church should be at least somewhat comfortable right?  The whole point of fellowship is that you feel that you're among friendly people right?
The subject matter of the service wasn't very challenging, but singing with a congregation and praying with a group of somewhat likeminded people was very moving and powerful for me. I certainly didn't feel that I was wasting my time. Honestly, the attitude you present here IS the reason I didn't go to another Baptist church. I just went and sat in a building with other people seeking a better walk with God.  I think it's pretty judgmental to say that just because the other people in the room may not believe like you do, that it's not a valid and powerful religious experience. I don't agree with all their beliefs either. I don't agree with ALL the beliefs in any religion or denomination. That doesn't mean God isn't there.
@GailThePainterly - I'll keep going to the church I tried as long as it seems friendly and useful.  It was really great to be in a pew surrounded by friendly people!  It just felt really really good.  I hope you can find one that works for you
@PPhilip - My sneakers have lasted me about a year and a half, but they've been split open for about 8 months lol.  I'm just too cheap to buy new ones until I HAVE to.
@suzyQ_darnit - I got my records back out recently because I have a new friend who thinks my collection is cool.  That made it all fun and new again to get them out and listen to them some more. Everything's more fun when you have a friend to share it with!
