  • I'm just back from a run, and am getting ready to go play tennis. Finally, the running is beginning to pay off in terms of weight loss--I've lost 3 pounds this week. Not much, but my first loss in five weeks of running.

I would like to just say that I hate running, but I'm no quitter. I committed to the 12 weeks and I'll finish the 12 weeks. Something tells me it will be a bit easier then, and I may not hate it as much.

I watched Capturing the Friedmans last night. Was that ever disturbing. I do really recommend it though--it's not an easy thing to watch, but it's an extraordinary film. For some reason, I thought it was called Deconstructing the Friedmans. I tried also to watch Bowling for Columbine on Showtime, but the channel reception was terrible and I finally gave up. It's on another channel tonight, so I'll try again.

I'm struggling my way through the Clinton book. As I was telling gempdx, I'm a Clinton fan (though he is not without flaws, for sure), but this book is almost impossible to read. So much detail. and I really, really hate the way that every time he mentions something to do with race or poverty or something like that, he says "and I thought about that day when I signed this bill." Or whatever. Maybe he really was guided by all those boyhood experiences, but it seems almost insulting to the reader, like he's trying so hard shape our perception of him. I think his record speaks for itself--a very good president with a lot of personal failings.

More later. I've got a couple of entries in the works.

    I need to sleep more.

My son just finished Bowling for Columbine and loved it. I give you a lot of credit for running. I don't think I could stick with it.

Congrats on the loss - pounds that is!

PS That movie sounds absolutely enthralling and horrifying all at once. Best not to watch it (for me). I get so upset when people hurt children.

I loved Capturing the Friedmans.  I thought it was wonderful.   It was hard to hear some of it, but mostly a good watch.

Hi OC - I haven't picked up the Clinton book for two days. I'm thinking that I will just skip ahead to where he is elected Governor of Arkansas and go on from there. Of course, my issues of Glamour and Fast Company just came today so those are competing for my attention.

Perhaps we'll finish the book by November? :)

I was mesmerised by Capturing the Friedmans.  I left the theatre mentally exhausted, emotionally taut.  My husband and I had an extensive conversation on it afterwards, over drinks.  It is a disturbing film; that it was the reality of that family makes it even more impacting.  After we talked through all the enigmas, the contradictions, the flaws and failures of both the family and the law, we were left bereft of the 'truth.'  While the documentary revealed a great deal of hidden realities, it didn't reveal what the truth was.  And that is the most disturbing thing about the film... were father and son guilty of the crimes for which they were convicted, or were they innocent and framed by the local law enforcement, through pseudo-therapy evidence and the like?

Even talking about the film now gives me shivers.  It's a slippery slope revealed in that film and the shades of grey drown out all black and white.

Hope you've managed to catch some winks!

At least you've started your running.  My cousin is trying to talk me into running some race to benift hydro....ummmm, hydro....some mental handicap disease.  Our Uncle has it.  Anyway, I told her I'd consider it.  I haven't even started trying to run yet, to see if I'd even be able to do so.

This sounds crazy, but I love long distance running - I hate that first mile or two - and after that I love it.  I am so glad that you're giving it a chance.

    Congrats on the weight loss!

I cannot share your enthusiasm for our former president, but I admire your determination on the running...

You are doing so great with the running.  I'm hoping to buy the Clinton book this week.  I've heard mixed reviews of it but I love him so I don't care if it's just flat out awful.  LOL

And thanks for the sweet birthday card, btw.  :)

    Keep up the good work!!

I agree with you on Clinton. His personal failings might have made him more human to most of us, but I sure as hell would rather have him back as president than that maniac Bush. *moan* I'll bet he's happy he wasn't president when the planes hit the twin towers, I know I wouldn't want to be the president on that day...

You summed it up so succintly - a great president with a lot of personal failings.  I'm conflicted, too, because I don't like that manipulative behavior, but I can't deny his charm & intelligence.  I still feel dirty.  I'd better have this navy dress drycleaned----
