  • Oh, what a day. More on it later.

I've been in and out of a funk the last few days. It started on Saturday when I lost a tennis match I should have won. For some reason, it really got me down. And then I lost again on Monday--by that time I had no confidence and it didn't help that the lady I played was basically Martina Navratilova in a bouncy red wig. This woman didn't miss one ball and I think she only made about two unforced errors. I'd like to say I hated her, but she was really nice.

I have got to get things together. Not just tennis. Everything. My house is clean, but I feel totally disorganized and undisciplined.

Thanks to all for your music suggestions. So far I haven't downloaded anything, but have been checking out your suggestions via the clips on iTunes.

Our blinds were finally installed last week and I love them.

It's so expensive to send kids to school (public school, no less): for Mack $200 in fees to the school, $300 for marching band, $100 for instrument rental. For Alex, $100 in fees to the school, $100 for instrument rental. Plus $100 for soccer, which isn't school-related. Not to mention new clothes and the million dollars in school supplies.\

I had to ride in Mr. S's car today, and I haven't felt well since. Between the smell, fearing for my life, and the motion sickness, I'm a mess. I've heard that if you're motion sick, you don't really feel 100% right again until after you sleep. I don't know if it's true, but I hope so.

Overheard today in downtown Portland, in response to a street preacher shouting on the corner: He was a real fire and brimstone type.

Lady:  Oh, I know all about all that, and that guy is full of it.

    Burrito maker lady: hmm.

Lady: Because I was raised Catholic.

    Burrito Maker Lady: Mmm hmm.

Lady: And I know it says in the Old Testament, "thou shalt go by the New Testament."

Fuh-nee. Jeez. Argh. I wonder if they do the Bible in comic book format?

Hope you get feeling better today. I am disintegrating as I type this. I really, really, really need more sleep.

Doesn't it also say in the Old Testament: "Street preachers are the bomb diggity!"  and "Never talk to thine burrito maker."?

Wow. Just wow... I guess we can see who paid attention in church :)

What kind of fees do you have to pay to a public school? The only things we ever had to pay for were a couple of dollars for lunch on a field trip or special assemblies.

Yeah, it's the activities that kill me too.

Look at the instrument fees this way...at least you don't have to BUY the instruments, like I did in high school. By the time I figured out that I'd stick with the clarinet, I was on my way to a $2200 horn. Plus occasional new mouthpieces (around $75) and a box of reeds about once a month (about $30).

Yeah, they said you'll need to go by the New Testament for the same reason they called the war in 1917 "World War I". I know hindsight's 20/20; what is FOREsight?

*cracking up over the overheard convo... ummm... sure, that works!

what happens to the kids whose parents can't afford those things? does that mean they have a sliding scale or that poor kids don't participate in them?

Moving always causes some discomboobulation in the psyche.  You'll get better.  Lots of changes.

School is always so expensive starting out.  It used to just break my bank every year.

Hope you get to feeling better, kiddo.

I remember that sick feeling of dishing out all that money at the beginning of school....

I hope you got some sleep, and that you don't have to ride in Mr. S's car again anytime soon.  Blech.  *hugs*

Oh so you survived some games at Candlestick, oh man, what a trooper. After spending a few months in NY, I came to fully realize why the Yankees are so hateable, so go Sox! It's hilarious to see the Yankees battling it out with Oakland for the Wild Card spot.

Awwww I hope your daughter enjoys marching band! I did it for 6 years and drum majored my senior year of HS. What instruments do the girls play?

I know just the corner you're talking about, or she was talking about.  I almost enjoy hearing them now, kind of a landmark from the dark ages.

    I was a band geek too :)

Anyhoo, what school are your daughters in?  I'm a PDX resident myself, and my little bro (who's taller than me - no fair!) is starting high school this year.  There are tons of fees associated with their school.  I was really surprised - it was nowhere near that when I was there ten years ago (gasp - am I actually old?)  I've been lurking around your blog for a while, mostly while I'm at work, and my coworkers always look at me funny when I start snickering at Mr. S. at my desk.  I'll have to watch out for his car, unless of course, you're driving!

I was raised Catholic and I don't seem to recall anything about "thou shall go by the new testament"

Oh, I've had days like that alright. Hang in there for the weekend.
I've also played people who play like junior Navratilovas and it's damn frustrating. Don't let it get to you. Some people are human backboards and there's nothing you can do about it.

I had a good game yesterday. Check the blog.
We are moving the mixed doubles indoors in a few weeks (which is good for my allergies) and I'm very glad to be in this group. We bond well and have lots of fun.
